Commercial service from BBSR to Rourkela and kolkata to rourkela can be started with immediate effect if govt do a bit of their job.Regarding jsg it still needs time. For the time being Rourkela can be the 2nd airport after BBSR where commercial service can be resumea asap.Once Jsg comes into play Rourkela can be upgraded and can demand for more flights.

Would it not be a better idea to retake the Rourkela Airport from SAIL and convert that to a larger airport, instead of upgrading Jharsuguda airport, considering that Rourkela is already a comparatively big city.
It would also be nice if somebody entrepreneur sets up a small airline operating 20 seater aircrafts within Orissa state to provide quick connectivity between the state capital and other cities and towns.

Below is what was posted sometime back on this website but no further development was done on this.Whom to blame..state govt,SAIL or AAI..No body even raised the issue or even pushed for it..If the concerned authorities could have taken action then the rourkela airport would being a reality for the state of Orissa..but who cares.. this is the cruelest that has ever happened for Rourkela like the ESIC..Find out..
Following is an excerpt from a New Indian Express report on this.
A three member survey team of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Friday made a spot assessment of the Rourkela airstrip to find out the feasibility of re-introduction of air connectivity to the city.
Led by senior civil aviation consultant and former executive director of AAI D P Chakravorty the team comprised Air Traffic Controller (East) Timir Bandhopadhyay and AAI?s Chief of Communication R K Chandra.
They have reportedly expressed satisfaction over the existing infrastructure.
The team found the airstrip infrastructre here better than that at Ranchi and Jamshedpur. The team, however, felt the need for a passenger terminal besides further strengthening of the existing fire services.
