I have been following your site for some time now and am happy to find it as a ‘single window’:) to whats happening in Odisha on the so called development front. Well, development is necessary and imperative but you will agree that it should not be the ‘andha dhund’ types…i,e at any cost. The Barunei Muhana is a very very ecologically sensitive area and if I am not wrong it is either within or adjacent to the Bhittarkanika National Park. There are ports coming up everywhere, infact at most of the river mouths in Odisha. Does the state need so many of them ? There are expert reports which blames the Paradeep port for the large scale destruction of mangrove forests, one of the main reasons for the super cyclone’s destructive trail. Mangrove forests are also spawning grounds for many varieties of edible fish on which thousands of traditional fishermen depend for survival. If ports are necessary then should it be built in such a fragile region ? The government should be rational in its approach to development. If a port benefits a particular company, gives employment to only a handful (highly mechanized systems do not generate employment)and destroys the environment, I am afraid it is a recipe for disaster, if not today then in the very near future.
