  I shall be very surprise if KIIT ever dare to challenge NISER at any point of time. Like morning shows the day its Biotech school has appointed its director (too young to lead any school) whose CV will not pass even screening in IISER / NISER.

  There are hundreds of good CVs in dust-bin of IISERs and is well reflected from its Seminar web page.

  Good point about the director.

  The point about the good CVs in dust-bin of IISERs is illuminating.

  But it actually suggests a way for KIIT to achieve respectability in research.

  It needs to develop schools in other sciences; hire people who are good but could not make it to IISER/NISER, then develop 5 yr M.Sc and Ph.D programs. If at that point it is able to attract a sizable number of INSPIRE fellows as its students it could get known in science.

  The number of INSPIRE fellows a science college has could actually become one of the measures of science colleges. The NISER/IISER/IITs will be at the top with 100%. If KIIT can get into the next level, it would be interesting.

  (Just thoughts to challenge the KIIT leadership.)

  I just glossed through the list of publications of the faculy members. Frankly, I’m not impressed, considering that we are talking about research team on BIOTECHNOLOGY. Being a Geologist, I may be wrong. However, I wish not to be.

  I think Debu babu and Prof. Mishra are right. My expectation of KIIT and other similar colleges is probably so low that i got excited when I just saw faculty with Ph.Ds and post-doc experiences.

  Yes, Prof. Baral, you are correct when you look at their training (Ph.D. and Post-Doc). However, only when these guys start publishing from their own lab (in KIIT), then only, we we can judge them. You will certaininly agree with me on this point.

  My two cents :
  1) Typical edn institute.The best prof/teacher will become the principal .But it’s not the case.Doesn’t matter whether s/he is competent enough to hold that post.The director is young.But he is one of the very few visionary Odia personalities I have come across or heard of till now. He has a mission in his mind. I have seen him in action .He is dynamic ,smart , passionate abt what he is doing. I wish him and his young team , simple best of luck.
  Just talk to the guy for one hour – you will get to know…
  2) The purpose of existence of KIIT is not challenging any other institute.
  It’s not Pepsi to challenge Coke. Perhaps the DNA is different And that is what ORISSA needs today. In the vision statement of the institute they have focussed on “developing a trained workforce in the emerging field of biotechnology and making it available to the common masses including especially the rural sector” . So you can find a list of the initiatives…
  3) For an education institute to excel both in academics ( good pedagogy/placements) and Research , the institute should reach a critical mass of faculty and researchers, funds & facilities . So give them some time.
  I am no way related to KIIT and the director.I am just a guy who thinks welfare of my motherland Orissa.

  Yes, Mr. Dash, we also feel proud to be Odiya. I don’t know him. But from his CV, it’s clear that the Director is certainly young and apart from other things he has vision. However, vision is a relative term. Vision comes with experience, so that the vision translates into action. And experience ONLY comes from publications/patents, not from verbal claims. Moreover, in a applied life science stream like BIOTECHNOLOGY, the extent of publication is enormous. I find that guys before submitting their Ph.D. theses have at least 6 to 7 papers in reputed International journals. If so what u have to say about publications of the KIIT group?
  For ur information, even today, maximum chunk of research funding of the DST is for life science. In addition, DBT is pouring funds and most them with same slogan-“developing a trained workforce in the emerging field of biotechnology and making it available to the common masses including especially the rural sector”. I have seen through the same verbatim phrases time and again. Hence, this is nothing new.
  May be the KIIT group will flurish. I wish they do so. But again only through publication/patent and implementation in real life, for which they have compete with other groups within Orissa and outside. U will certainly agree with me on this point. Because that’s the reality of life.
  I wish the KIIT BT group all the success.

  Hello,
  Well I am a student of MSc. biotechnology from KIIT university and well i feel many people questioning the institute.Well if any one has any doubts regardig the institute please do come and visit us sometime rather than hatching eggs in the air and just reading things written on KIITbiotech website.
  Somethings i think u people dont know
  1 KIIT school of biotech – first private autonomous college to get 5 crores grant from DBT
  2. first in the entire eastern region to set up a cell for enterpreneurship sponsored by Department of Science and Technology
  3.Dr Richrad Ernst ,Nobel Laureatre is our legal adviser
  4 Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel Nobel laureate, Dr. Hans hengartner ,Prof peterleuthy ,etc and also some foreign noted sicentists are visitors and teachers in our institute
  5International collabrations- EMBL,ETH,CLeaveland and many more
  6infrastructure – see for yourself

  And most important this all in just 1 year of its establishment.Did NISER,etc. have it in first year of their exsistence huh!!!!!!!!!

  If u want to know our research achievements then come and see for youself……..Everything needs time to grow and this insititute has the right people at right time………

  I had been to School of Biotechnology to discuss about my PhD . I saw the facilities and believe me its outstanding. Being a deemed University, the institute is building such a strong research facility. Its remarkable. I do not regret as I could not get a place there but feel happy that such a institute exist in home state. Faculties are so friendly and nice. I faced a tough interview there.

  I was going through all the comments from professionals with diverse scientific/educational background, and just thought of expressing my honest opinion. First of all being an Odia I am pleased to see the recent developments in the biotechnology academia sector in Odisha. The KIIT Biotech School seems quite good and competitive, and certainly you cannot judge the research quality and productivity of an institution within 10 years of its inception. It actually took a long time (>10 years) for the so-called big research institutions in India to establish themselves, that too with huge financial, beurocratic and political support from the central government. You cannot blame the director of the KIIT biotech school as young and inexperienced. If you think you have some better ideas then chip-in your suggestions to him – I am sure he will take those notes seriously. He has already gathered some good faculty members, consistently attracting good students and getting good placements for them. In contrast the so-called big research institutions in India like IISc, NCBS, NII and so on… have very experienced and senior scientists as directors, but what those institutes have achieved so far in biotechnology? Those institutions have been provided with huge amounts of TAX-PAYER’s (I mean it – tax payers are usually the middle class and poor people) money as research grants and instrument purchase supports. Have they produced a single technology / drug target / drug molecule or even a single conclusive study in biology, which can improve the mankind so far? Just publishing funny science in big journals is worthless and to some extent a crime (if you are paid tax-payers money to do that science). So, please don’t compare this institution with others. If possible extend your help and expertise to make this institution a role-model for others.

  I was just searching the web pages of KIIT and found something interesting and funny too. I am a faculty of KIIT School of technology and thought of giving comments on this issue. People are talking about our school of Biotech and the young Director. Some are talking good and some are not. Let me share this with you. He is an outstanding person and the most dynamic, young and visionary director. He is so charged and competent that many of us are following his suggestions. I am not from Biotech, but have interacted with him so many times. He has answers for many things. He does something which are not questionable. With his leadership, KIIT Biotech is growing in many directions. For his vision, our visionary founder has appointed him as the Chairman of KIIT R&D and he is the one who is showing many of us the right way. If you don’t know him, just talk to him. You will like him, in fact love him. I have seen many directors in my life but he is different. He is just ahead of any director. I wish him good luck

  Well, many of us are discussing about Dr. Mrutyunjay who is heading the School of Biotechnology. Its really a sad part of the discussion that none of you have not seen the man. Just meet him. He is passionate, visionary and honest man. The way he is developing the School of Biotechnology, its commendable. None of us can even dare to think. I have seen the way other Govt institutions are developing in the locality with so much of money pumped in. Just see the KIIT School of Biotech people are doing. No institutions can challenge their vision. Regarding the age to be a Director. Gone are those days when age was factor. I think he is the most able director I could see in the region. Regarding CVs of faculty, KIIT Biotech faculties are outstanding as compared to NISER. Just go to NCBI site and find their publications.

  I totlally agree with the comment that the resume … will go straight into the bins at NISER /IITs. … at KIIT Biotechnology is not only inexperienced …

  I have a MS from IISc and PhD from a US university and have been working in biomedical area in UK since last 2-3 years. Since I am from BBSR I showed some interest to share some of my work to NISER and KIIT Biotech. I got a prompt reply from NISER and inspite of several requests … did not respond, …

  What a surprise? I am happy to see that few people are discussing on KIIT University and specially on Biotechnology. I do not know the background of whole discussion but it seems some people are not happy with the growth of KIIT Biotech. Please do not bring personal attacks into picture. Being from intellectual community, we must think on how to develop a knowledge based ecosystem in Bhubaneswar which will later on be replicated in Orissa and in India. I am from a govt research organisation from Bhubaneswar and also highly experienced in west. I am also from the field of life sciences and working in reputed national level organisation. I admit here, the way KIIT Biotech is growing it is going to be altogether a different kind of institution which other so called premier institution will follow. I am happy to share that I had the same impression about KIIT Biotech as you have. A meeting with KIIT Biotech Director and his faculty members, completely transformed my impression. They are aggressive in working, systematic, and visionary. Lets motivate them to deliver more. Regarding CVs of faculties, I have personally seen them very good. Why to question that without looking at their CVs. Be open and honest in your statements. I wish the young and dynamic team of KIIT biotech, simply all the best ad go ahead.

  KIIT School of Biotechnology is one of the reputed university in the eastern India. It avails all faculty for Ph.Ds and biotechnology research for the students with as world class education.

  I would like to inform all the participant in the above discussion forum to consider the spirit of KSBT in driving the positive aspects of modern Biotechnology Education.
  REALITY is far greater than MYSTERY. STATISTICS speaks for itself. KSBT is a front runner in placing all the passing students in the best of the core industries in India. It has a dozen students working at various reputed international institutes and earned PhD scholarship on their own .
  2007 November-2010 August…. 34 months- the number of our collaborators and aspirants are increasing exponentially. We have no enmity with any group or institute we just want to pave our own path guided by a Young and thriving team with a MISSION- VISION AND PASSION called BIOTECH. The critical mass has been gathered, momentum is slowly gaining now it is the time to FLY and soar higher and higher without looking down at anybody or belittling anybody- we are our own competitors… Sky is the limit for us.
