Update on IIIT Bhubaneswar and IIIT Berhampur

July 11th, 2009

Following is an excerpt from a report in Expressbuzz.com.

The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bhubaneswar, is all set to launch B Tech courses in several disciplines from the ensuing academic session.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted its approval to the premier institute for intake of 240 students in the disciplines of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and IT. Each discipline would have a seat strength of 60.

The students for the B Tech programme would be taken from the State JEE this year. Plans are to restrict intake from State JEE to between 50 and 60 percent and the rest from AIEE and IIT JEE in the subsequent years. Along with the B Tech courses, the institute will also include Ph.D programmes in its curriculum from this year.

… A proposal would be put up with the UGC for accordance of University status to it once it gets going in full strength. The institute, which is presently conducting M Tech courses in Computer Science and IT with 25 students each from the OCAC building, is expected to shift to its own campus at Gothapatna on the outskirts of the Capital in August this year. The campus would come up as a state-of-the-art facility to provide top standard atmosphere and education to the students. Spanning over 23 acres, the IIIT would then have around 2000 students, Prof Nayak said.

work has started on establishing a second IIIT at Berhampur. The Government has allotted 100 acres for the proposed institute at Rangeilunda.

IIIT at Berhampur is indeed a positive step and will help the State in having a good IT education base. But, why there is no announcement made by Union Governemnt on IIIT-Berhampur like other centrall funded institutes?

It is an excellent step taken by Odisha state government by choosing IIIT location to BRAHMAPUR, which will create an alterative hub other than capital region and shall bridge education corridor of Odisha between BBSR-BAM. I believe inauguration of third STPI of Odisha and IIIT foundation stone will be held at one time.

IIIT Berhampur, indeed a brave step.
But IIIT Bhubaneswar has now developed properly.
The student strength is not so high.
It has not got its own permanent campus.
And above all, it does not have marked any significance
    nationally.
So, inspite of diversing the aim, govt. should focus on the IIIT bbsr in the 1st place.

i have got ojee rank 2683 (general) , can i expect a seat in EE or ETC in IIIT bhubaneswar?

  • 9. Chitta Baral  |  July 28th, 2009 at 5:47 am

Based on how it has gone so far, I think EE and ETC at IIIT may get over by 1500. But that is just a guess.

  • 10. aditya  |  August 3rd, 2009 at 3:33 pm

i think that the 9th comment of urs is misleading…coz seeing the GEWO counselling status it seems that even IT (a less prefered branch over ETC ,EEE & CSC now)of iiit will also get over by <1000

  • 11. Chitta Baral  |  August 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Aditya may be right. No one really knows when it will get over.

  • 12. aditya  |  August 5th, 2009 at 8:56 am

i ve heard that iiit is an autonomous insti… is it true?and what freedom it enjoys being autonomous if it is…?

  • 13. Sunny  |  August 6th, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Sir I have taken E&EE in IIIT Bhubaneswar.I want to know whether it is an autonomous institute.Secondly the placements after 4 years. Can it be better than CET,UCE as it has strong governing body from top IT industry.

  • 14. pradipta  |  September 4th, 2009 at 8:48 pm

What is this IIIT Bhubaneswar? How can it be christened as such? Is it not misleading to have the same name as that of an All India Institute when it is just a State Funded Institute and IIITs are normally Centre-funded and under Ministry of HRD, GOI. OR is there a thinking of merging this iiit with the real IIIT? Bhubaneswar iiit tries to copy the Fee Structure from IIIT, Hyderabad without any similarity/parity in their respective infrastructure. Despite conducting recruitment test for faculty it is yet to publish the entire list of Faculty or it wants to run the institute with just Seven Nos of Faculty ? Further, what is the extent of Industry’s participation in this Institute ? Have the Industry’s representative in the governing body of IIIT, Bh given assurance as to their contribution to the Institute and/or its students especially in career development. It is time the GOO and other Authorities come clean on these aspects.

  • 15. dc patnaik  |  October 18th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Yes, the name IIIT appears misleading but thats how it is. But when you expand it, the term is clear. As per govt policy if its funded fully by Govt Of India then you have INDIAN tag attached. If state funded then it can be other than indian like INTERNATIONAL(though nothing international about it) or even INDRAPRASTHA as Govt of NCD, Delhi has named their institute. But lets face it. There is nothing in a name.IITs are good not because of INDIAN tag but because they are good

    @ DC Patnaik

Actually there use to be 3 kins of IIIT`s :

    1. Fully Govt Funded: Ya! they do have names as Indian Institutes of Technologies. Ex: IIIT Gwalior, Allahabad, Kanchipuram, Jabalpur(IIITDM) etc…

    2. Private Institutions: They are recognized to some other universities, Ex: I2IT Pune(or IIIT Pune), IIIT-M Kerla

    3. Govt-Private Funded: They are really gud one`s, gud infrast…so on, Ex: IIIT-Hyderabad(here initial I is for International, earlier it was Indian but now they turned to International and moreover IIIT-H is deemed university, gud placement,R&D etc.), same sotry is with IIIT-Bangalore(Deemed University- but offers only Post Graduate Courses, believe me it`s having excellent infrastructure and placement), and on the lines of above two IIIT-BH i believe so…..but only sad thing is it`s not having Deemed Status(though courses are approved by AICTE and IIIT-Bh is autonomous also i mean they can design their curricullum, evaluation etc but degree is issued by BPUT Orissa)

Conclusion: I dont know know whether IIIT-BH will excel in the field of IT or not but one thing i observed that, UGC will not give them Deemed Status under Section 3, until and unless they develop their infrastructure, and they are pacing towards it…..

    and sorry for typos(error)

I am friend of a student of iiit bbsr. From him i came to know that though the institution is taking huge amount of money but the faculty, facility, infrastructure is very poor.Again i heard from him about compulsory hostel rule. Many students are from bhubaneswar itself what is the need of it god knows. They are just exacting huge sum from parents only to give them dreams of what the institute will be in future.I hope this new stratergy of taking money by compulosy hostel will be withdrawn, unless i honestly advise donot take admisson in this college.
