Politicians are not much involved in private engineering or medical colleges in Orissa
July 25th, 2009
Update: Let me define what I mean precisely. What I have in mind is:
A college/institution has a link with a politician if
(a) The politician is or has been an MLA or MP
(b) The politician himself/herself or his/her wife/husband/son/daughter/brother/sister is the president or secretary of the trust that runs the college/institution.
Unlike the other states where many engineering colleges have family links with politicians and ministers this is not the case in Orissa. I could only identify two colleges which have direct links with seating politicians. They are both new colleges. They are:
- KMBB COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY DALEIPUT, KHURDA (KCE) Pvt.
- VIVEKANANDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY BHUBANESWAR (VIB) Pvt.
If any readers know of more colleges, please let me know.

I think one can include “Bhadrak Institute of Engineering & Technology Barapada, Bhadrak (BIT)” without any doubt as its Chairman is a Cabinet minister of State Govt,Mr Prafulla Samal.
Similarly “Ghanashyama Hemalata Institute of Technology & Management Chhaitana Puri (GHT)” is established by Mr Ghanshyama Jena, who belongs to INTUC which is affiliated to INC.His son in law Mr Prabhat Biswal runs 4 engineering colleges in Bhubaneswar, which are CEB,BEC,KISD & KIT.

It is difficult to find direct links between politicians and engineering colleges. But generally most private engineering colleges in India can be grouped under certain broad categories. I am sure the state of Orissa is no different from the other states. The categories private engineering colleges can be grouped under are as follows:
1. Politicians owning colleges through trusts (generally in memory of their departed mother/father/brother).
2. Religious trusts (Satya Sai, Sri Sri, Xavier etc.)
3. Educationists (read Academics) grouping together or with the backing of industrial groups or politicians (BIT I think)
4. Real Estate players foraying into education (Hi-Tech / Aryan Institute etc.). Politicians too could be involved in this category by using this outlet as a safe way to park their funds through real estate companies.
If you know of any other categories feel free to add them.
