KIIT plans an autism center at KIMS
July 8th, 2007
Pragativadi reports that the KIIT foundation plans to establish an autism center at KIMS (Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences). Following are some excerpts from that report.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Nalini Menon, head of Rainbow Centre for Autism, Bangalore.
In his opening address, chancellor of KIIT University, Dr Achyut Samant said that KIMS would soon have a modern centre for treatment and research on autism to be set up under able guidance of Menon.
Stating that a majority of the patients from Orissa have to go to Bangalore for the treatment of this disorder, Dr Samant said that the proposed autism centre at KIMS would be immensely beneficial for the patients as we as researchers in the field.
Addressing the workshop, Prof Menon said that Autism is not localised in India but prevalent in all parts of the world.
In his speech, Dr Kailash Chandra Panda, former principal of the Regional Institute of Education, said that autism is a pervasive developmental neurological disorder, which is detectable from age of three onwards in affected children.
The proposed autism center at KIMS would be the first of its kind in the state, he informed.

this is an excellent step taken by KIMS. this type of centers are very much required in a state like Orissa where people have little knowledge about Autism & they have to travel to delhi & bangalore to get their child treated.
this center will definitely proves to be beneficial to all the occupational therapists of the state, who in turn will get good exposure.
regards,
meenakshi panda

Respected sir,
Myself DURGAPRASAD MISHRA(Occupational Therapist,NIRTAR).I came to know about this centre through our institute’s notice board.Really this is a great step.
As autism comes under pervasive developmental disorder(PDD) that means constant & intense, and also there is limitations of many aspects of behavior, communication along with social interaction skills.Besides this abnormalities of sensory processing, perceptual processing, etc. may be present.Hence this needs to be addressed according to the problem gained through proper assessment & accordingly intervention plan can be formulated.
Through autism center this steps can became reality.thus many child having autism, sensory integration problem, sensory processing disorder ,etc can be benifited .
