Update on BESU becoming an IIEST

Following is an excerpt from a report in the Statesman.
The Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu), being renamed as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST),Shibpur, would enrol students who qualify the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), an all India entrance examination, only.
Among the total enrolled students, 50 per cent would be admitted from the domicile category of AIEEE and the rest will be admitted from the non-domicile category. The Centre will send a letter detailing the admission procedure and the administrative set up to the state government next week. Once the letter reaches the higher education department, Besu would start taking in candidates.
The mode of governance that Besu followed by Besu would be in accordance with the recommendations laid down by the Anandkrishnan Committee. The board of governors will be the highest body in IIEST. It will be constituted by the Centre and will have some officials from the state. The number of state representatives in this body would be mentioned in the Centre’s letter. No Bill would be introduced in the Winter session of the Parliament to upgrade Besu to IIEST.
As Besu is the first institute to be upgraded to IIEST, Centre would not enact a separate IIEST Act. Instead the amendments would be included in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Act as two separate schedules. Later on when more institutes acquire the IIEST status, a separate IIEST Act would be formulated”, said Prof BN Datta, dean, sponsored research, Besu.On the other hand, Jadavpur University, that had come out of the fold of the proposed IIESTs, is yet to hear anything from the Centre in regard to its letter urging to confer the status of Institute of National Eminence on JU.

The central government will never mete out justice to our luckless state. 60 years of neglect has created so much regional disparity that it will be hard to recover.
Bangladesh, which gained independence only in 1971 is doing better than Orissa. The only way for Orissa to develop – seriously – is a secessionist movement. Only then will the center do something about Orissa.

It is india where good process become lazy in the barrier of politics …a university named Bengal Engineering & Science University which got the highest points among all the engineering institution in india is yet to got its reward of becoming IIEST.according to the report(published on august,99) a comission its good enogh to become a IIT but the politician of bengal r thinking another fate for Besu….But the time has come the politician must realize for the developement of bengal as well as india(BESU is under the programme TEQUIP & Build India 2020) they have to leave besu to the central goverenment…

Well, BESU,SHIBPUR is the best option for IIEST. The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, established as Civil Engineering College, Calcutta, way back in 1856 with the idea of introducing engineering education in the country, has a long and checkered past .By the Anandkrishnan Committee BESU ranked top in their list among all the engineering colleges..

This college BESU use to do a pioneer work in whole Asia in the area of science and engineering and also this college is a Mother of all IIT. This college truely desrve to be college of Golbal importance atleast IIEST for now.

Both BESU & CUSAT deserves “INI” status and should be upgraded to IIEST without any further delay.

I am very glad to know that Govt. of India has sanctioned Rs. 15 Cr. to upgrade BESU to IIEST. I am an ex-student of this university in Computer Science & Technology Department in the year 2009.
When we were in our 2nd year in BESU, we did Hunger Strike as a movement to upgrade BESU to IIEST. Now I am very happy that at last our effort is successfull.

I am a 1st yr civil student of BESU.Becoming IIEST of BESU is like a dream to us.
This institute have the potential of being an IIT.
I request to some politicians not to create further hindrances in the way of development.

It is very good new to all of BESU students that BESU becoming IIEST. It was a 150 years old college and it needs to be upgraded. I am an ex student of this college in EE Dept in the year 2008. We have done hunger strike for BESU to IIEST/IIT status.
