Minister Chandrasekhar Sahu’s take on the IIT and world class central university
March 30th, 2008
Following is an excerpt from a report in New Indian Express.
Sahu claimed that the sanction of two central institutes was possible because of his persistent demand for an IIT in a backward but mineral-rich State like Orissa. The IIT will be established with an estimated cost of Rs 760 crore and the Central University Rs 1,000 crore.

I hope this announcement does not meet the same fate as IISER Bhubeswar. General election is due in 2009. Rahul Gandhi just concluded a Orissa Road show. Mr Sahu is perhaps jumping a bit too early take to stake the claim for credits.

I tend to agree with the view of Shri R K Ghosh. First , all should make our sincere efforts so that the announced Institutions are not shifted to any other state. This is our primary resonsibility; be it Minister, beaurocarts, politicains, social activits or, citizen belonging to orissa. I would request our only Minister represnting Orissa in the Council of Ministers to accelerate his efforts to have one IIIT at Berhmpur, NIFT and NID at Bhubneswar before general election is notified.
He is also requested to make effort for setting up atlest one NIT for Orissa and converting UCE, Burla and CET, Bhubaneswar as IIEST during thev11th plan period.:- Regards,KCDAS

mr sahu, if the iit and central university was possible due to your persistent effort, now can you ensure that it would be established in the backward region( western, southern) of orissa. can not, as you dont have the same lobby in bbsr. same katakias would take it away.

I don’t share Mr. Debendra’s idea of locating IIT in a backward area. You will then have a backward iIT. Look at IIT Chennai, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. These IITs now have top grade faculty. All other IITs including IIT Kanpur is feeling the pinch of locational disadvantages. In my opinion IIT Roorkee will never attend the level of other IITs. IIT Kharagpur has already slipped quite bit from the time when Prof Chitta Baral was a student. I don’t think IIT Orissa can attend even the level of IIT Kharagpur if it is located in Backward area. In fact location card is a very dangerous game as far as location of educational institutes are concerned. Infrastructure, accessibility, comfort of live are very important parameters for attracting good faculty. An institution may have everything else but no competent faculty. In that case the institute will never reach the brand equity level that Metro IITs have reached. I am sorry to argue like this, but it is a bitter truth. So, I will request all to work for IIT Bhubaneswar and nothing else.
