Like most statistics, the data hides more than it shows. But it points to the importance of a good location, more so than ever before.

IIT Madras numbers are surprising. Perhaps Chennai and Hyderabad don’t produce many top rankers anymore; Kota factories might have overtaken them.

This report and many others mention that the coaching bosses in Kota advice students to go to IIT Bombay. That would definitely sway young minds. Also, In recent years IIT Bombay CS has attracted some top notch faculty who continue to be very productive; especially in Databases their faculty could be top ten-twenty worldwide.

I agree with Kota coaching classes (aka Kota factories) are the main reason behind IITB’ s popularity. IITB, C, and D have traditionally been ‘zonal’ IITs, i.e., a majority of their students are from their own zone, while K and G have been more cosmo. If I am not wrong, Kota comes under Bombay zone.

I am not sure about faculty though. D and K have hired quite a few in last few years (RKG probably knows more). I don’t think B’s DB group makes any difference as they have been pretty good for a long long time now.

As Pratyusa points out Kota is under IITB’s zone. We have been told that so called ” Kota factories” are also advised by a number of retired professors from IITB. Over the years due to a number of unfortunate suicides among the students of IITK, there is a general perception that academic pressure at IITK is more. The Kota bosses advise students to opt for IITB which according to them provides a “relaxed” environment. The students therefore, prefer IITB. Also as Chitta says IITB’s database faculty is very strong. Besides IITB’s faculty strength is about twice of IITK after they merged school of IT with Dept of CSE. IITB has now introduced a number of early exit routes for students. Wherein a non-performing student can walk out with some kind of a degree. The old B. Tech degree will now be christened as B. Tech (Hons) degree. They have also reduced the credit requirement for various degrees.
