Law University to start classes in 2009-2010

August 7th, 2008

Following is from a report in Pioneer.

The classes for the proposed Law University will commence from the next academic year 2009-10.

A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday. LN Mitra from the National Law University (NLU) attended the meeting. The proposal for the university was announced by the Union Law Minister in 2005.

The classes would commence either at the Madhu Sudan Law College or in the campus of Ravenshaw Law College.

The proposed university would be set up at Naraj in an area of 50 acre. The State Government has already acquired 30 acres of land for this purpose.

The Chief Justice of India will function as chancellor of the University while the Bar Council of India will run the entire curriculum of the university.

Lets hope things don’t get delayed as much as they have been till date…..
The fact that the Honorable Chief Justice of India is to act as the Chancellor of the proposed Law School is sure to provide it with a rare stature as the only 2 Law Schools in India where the CJ, I functions as the Chancellor are the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru and the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata………

The timing seems perfect as Law School campuses across the nation (NLSIU, NUJS & NALSAR, Hyderabad in particular) gear up for the ‘Magic Circle’ and the ‘White Shoe’ firms in a real Big way as a natural by-product of the WTO era and increasing globalisation.
Odissa, with an incredibly fast industrialising economy has to have the best and the sharpest of the legal brains as well………..
Besides, with the IIT, Bbs for the engineers n the R&D stream, AIIMS, Bbs for the Med frat., it was strongly being felt by the Odiya Lawyers around the globe that the Law frat. was lagging behind somewhat……
good for Odissa and good for all the aspiring lawyers……

I second Abhishek on the above opinions….National Law Schools across the country are those few places where the upshot of the recent economic slump would fade sooner than the rest…if it starts in 2009…by the time the first batch passes out in 2014…it would be right in time to cater to the industry needs.

The plans are good..Hon’ble CJI being the Chancellor & the very fact that Prof Mitra is associated…the team is seems promising. The entire fate depends broadly on 3 things now:-

    1) Who is the Vice Chancellor/Director?…would be really good if Prof Mitra lights the baton…but, if not him who else?…That becomes very vital. The recent fiasco at one of the prominent National Law Universitys in the country speaks for itself.

2)The role of the state govt. in the administration once the ball starts rolling…the NLU administration should be given a free hand..at the same time finances play a major role n so the Govt.’s response has a lot to do.

3)The kind of reservation policy adopted by the NLU….Many colleges have 50% state reservations. If similar practices are adopted then that COULD jeopardise the future.

The stage is set…now it’s time for some full sweep….Cheers to the future!!…Good Luck to NLU, Orissa!!
