Call to Ravenshaw alumni and well-wishers: Support, contribute and help in making it a world-class University

Recently the Vice Chancellor of Ravenshaw University made a presentation to the CM about Ravenshaw’s future. As an outcome of this presentation the Orissa government agreed to give land for a second campus of Ravenshaw. The Ravenshaw vice chancellor seems to have a lot of ideas on how to take Ravenshaw to the next level and is looking for support from all corners. I always thought Ravenshaw College has a chance for survival if it becomes autonomous. Unfortunately, after many year since it was granted the status of autonomous college, there has been no progress. I would like to share my ideas of making a truly world class institute out of Ravenshaw Collage are as follows:
1. The college should be made free from interferences that ails our education system. Insulating the college from even petty criminals who operate in the neighbourhood has been a difficult task because of the lack of political will.
2. Transparent admission and recruitment policies will help a lot in this effort. The cadre of teaching and support staff for the college should be independent from govt cadre. The college should have a board of governers consisting of eminent educationists from all over India. BOG should be responsible for major policy and adiministrative decisions and their implementation through VC.
3. Any world class institute requires good funding. Perhaps an initial funding of about 200 corers is necessary for the same with an operating annual funding about 30-50 corers.
4. College should be relocated in a place away from main bazar area. At its current location it lacks the required academic ambiences. The land and assets of current college can be
used to generate funds for new compact campus somewhere
around bidanasi project area or mahanadi project area.
5. College should discontinue teaching of subjects that have lost relevance in present day scenario. For example, discontinue regular B. Com and M. Com. Introduce integrated MBA with strong economics background. It should discontinue offering of subjects like political science, psychology, history, etc. Science subjects can be reformulated to suit to the current trends. The academic council should have enough participation from teachers so that any change can be done quickly without much bureaucratic hassles.
6. A strong and vibrant research program will be most helpful in keeping the competitive edge of the college. Funding agencies like DST, CSIR and others should be approached with a focused plans for establishing a few centers of excellence.
7. Introducing certain technical faculties could help to develop a different student culture and urgency in career building then indulging in politics.
8. With the current Chief Minister’s keenness for all round development of education system in Orissa, I think the college will definitely see better lights of the day.
9. To start with College should establish a web site and a strong base of alumni.

The above suggestions are really valuable. Some of these are already being addressed, the rest should be addressed. The ones that are being addressed are:
* a new campus away from Cuttack market area
* a web site
* new courses
* revamping of the department structure
