Private medical colleges under the auspices of WODC (Western Orissa development Council)

May 8th, 2007

Update: Pragativadi also reports on it.

For some time the Orissa government and the WODC (Western Orissa Development Council) have been trying to develop 3 private medical colleges in Rourkela, Balangir and Jarangi near Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi. [Telegraph Feb 2005,Hindu Nov 2006]

Today’s Sambada reports on some progress with respect to these. Maximum progress has been made with respect to the one in Jarangi near Bhawanipatna. WODC has provided 25 acres of land and 2.5 crores in two instalments. In December 2006 a 100 bed hospital was completed and by July 2007 a 300 bed hospital is targeted to be complete.

In Balangir 25 acres have been provided to Sri Balaji trust. They are expected to start construction soon.

However, with respect to Rourkela, very little progress has been made. The land has not been allocated yet. The delay is kind of surprising as Rourkela is the second biggest metropolitan area in Orissa and is well connected to the rest of India, so their is good number of people who can afford to pay to the private hospital part of the medical college.

    The steps above sound good.

Regarding Rourkela, I guess we had the Luknawi Nawab syndrome. Everybody waiting for someone else to contribute :).

    But still, very good news…..
