Efforts on to make Khallikote a unitary university
December 23rd, 2008
Following are excerpts from a report in tathya.in.
With UCE Burla granted the Unitary State University (USU) status, lawmakers of southern Orissa have urged the Chief Minister to declare the century-old Khallikote Autonomous College (KAC) in Berhampur, an USU.
The KAC has been the Center of Learning and intellectual pursuits in Orissa since long.
Lawmakers including Sugyani Kumari Deo, R CC Patnaik, Bikram Kesari Arukh, Usha Devi, Ladu Kishore Swain, Bharat Paik, Niranjan Pradhan and Saroj Kumar Padhi have requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter to the next Cabinet.
All of them have appealed Naveen Patnaik to upgrade the institution from autonomous status to USU.
The Chief Minister has asked the Higher Education department to take up the case.
Accordingly Madhu Sudan Padhi, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Higher Education has processed the file, said sources.
A Cabinet Note is being prepared for the purpose, revealed an official.
Most likely the proposal will be accepted, thanks to the elections round the corner.
Than Orissa will have 3 unitary universities with Ravenshaw and UCE Burla (VSS) Unitary University earlier given the status.
The KAC which started in 1856 as a Zilla School is now a full fledged Post Graduate College having autonomous status since 1990.

A brief history about Khallikote Autonomous College
Brahmapur-760001, Ganjam, Odisha
An autonomous college providing teaching upto Post-Graduate, M.Phil and MCA degrees
The century-old institution with its glorious past of more than hundered years has been the center of learning and intellectual pursuits in Odisha. The college has its origin in 1856 as a Zilla School. It continued as a High School until 1878 when it acquired the status of an Intermediate College with the addition of F.A. class. In 1887, it was renamed as the Native College. In 1896, the building which at present houses the Khalllikote Junior College was constructed. The present extensive play ground on the far side of the main road was acquired in 1913. The huge building presently housing the library on the ground floor and class on the first floor was constructed in 1944. In 1963 the college was elevated to a postgraduate college, opening P.G. in Economics, Commerce and Chemistry and later English and Mathematics. The three storeyed building now presenting the front view was constructed in 1979. The Centenary Building and Life Science Block with four galleries were added in 1982.
At present the college has eighteen undergraduate departments with Hons. and eleven P.G.Depts in Humanities, Science and Commerce faculties and M.Phil, in Mathematics, Economics, Botany and Commerce. The U.G.C. conferred autonomy to this premier institution in 1990. In keeping with the increasing demand of the times M.C.A course has been introduced from the session 1997-98.

Efforts to grant Unitary University status to Khallikote College, one of the oldest institutions of the state, which was established more than 150 years ago must be welcomed. This will immensely benefit students of south Orissa in particular as the proposed CU at Koraput will have no affiliated colleges under it and local students will get no special benefits for admission as the selection as proposed under the Central Universities Bill, 2008 will be purely based on merit.

USU to Khallikote Autonomous College is a welcome step. Let us hope, this will be fulfilled before the end of this financial year.

Its Grace of Divine Mother Saraswati, that our College is going to become UCU after having become a autonomous one. I was a student from 1980 to 1986. Hope by Her Grace The Teachers will goad the students to new heights. The students passing out from our college have great respect and are in demand.
