IIT Kanpur to open extension centre in Noida; in future IIT Bhubaneswar should open an extension centre in Sambalpur/Rourkela region
June 23rd, 2009
Following is an excerpt from a report in Business standard:
The HRD Ministry has granted permission to IIT Kanpur to open an extension centre in Noida, work on which will start within a week. IIT Kanpur Registrar Sanjiv Kashalkar told PTI that the work will be completed by 2012. He said that a ‘distance learning centre’ will also be opened there.
Kashalkar said the centre will function on the lines of India International Centre with technocrats imparting technical education through conferences. It will also provide several short-term management courses and refresher courses meant for distance learning, he said.
The premier institute has been granted five acres of land in sector 62 of Noida.

Also, in 3-4 years after IIT Bhubaneswar is independent of IIT Kharagpur, it should take over the IIT Kharagpur extension center in Bhubaneswar and IIT Khargapur should be pursued to have an extension center in another region, perhaps in nearby Balasore.

I beg to differ with this line. I don’t understand this race for locating technical institutes in Western Orissa. You have a Technical University at Sambalpur and a NIT in Rourkela. How an IIT extension branch can help these places? In my view the remote parts of southern and western orissa should have this extension campus. Balangir, Rayagada or Phulbani should be the location and not Sambalpur or Rourkela.

Forgot to add the BPUT at Rourkela along with NIT besides the new Technical University at Burla. This region has the best of technical education facility in the state, if you exclude the newly established IIT at BBSR.

The original post is written by Sanjib. IIT Bhubaneswar should open an extension center at a later time. Where? A big question.
It could be different from the other IITs that open mostly in big urban areas and open one in a smaller town. Balangir, Phulbani, Rayagada sound good.

I am not opposed to the idea of having an extension centre in Balangir, Phulbani, or Rayagada. I am originally from Balangir. I have proposed this location because of VSS Tech Uni and NIT RKL. An extension branch of IIT will create a knowledge cluster in this region. Also, this centre can bridge NIT and VSS Tech Univ with IIT BBSR for improving their research and education. Furthermore, Sambalpur and Rourkela are big cities and have better infrastructure as compared to other part of this region. Remember, today IIT is located in BBSR because of good infrastructure. This is just a suggestion. Have your say.

I do not think there is any necessity of an extension centere of IIT Kgp in the Orissa anymore, once IIT BBSR is fully functional. As such IIT Kgp has the oldest extension center in Salt lake, Kolkata. Hence, the debate should be only about the location of the extension center of IIT BBSR.
