Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology promises to provide its top five students higher studies and research opportunities in the USA

July 14th, 2009

NOTE: Please note that I am in the board of advisors of BIT. I agreed to join the board because I believe in the people who are making it. Nevertheless I am obviously biased.

The above statement is made in a report about Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology in Pioneer. Some excerpts from that report are:

A group of likeminded eminent NRO academicians have come together to start the Bhubaneswar Institute of Technology (BIT) and offer students of the State the opportunity for technical education and research of international standard and style. The institute promises its students education by experienced faculty from the US, innovative teaching methods and much more within the framework of the BPUT curriculum.

… There would also be opportunities for students to “Earn while Learn,” “Learn While You Teach” and the top five students would be provided opportunities in the US for higher studies and research, he said. The BIT hopes to achieve all this through its experienced faculty, both visiting and permanent, from places like the US, Canada and Singapore.

I beleive that the above promise would be honored. That is because:

  • The BIT founders include several professors in the USA, two of whom (Prof. Laxmi Bhuyan and Prof. Prasant Mohapatra) are Chairmen of their departments at University of Califoirnia at Riversive and University of California at Davis respectively.
  • The top students from Orissa are as good as from any other state in India and thus many US universities would love to take them as graduate students and they will believe the quality of these students when these students submit recommendation letters written by professors in the US who know the students closely because of their association with BIT.

BIT’s initial faculty recruitment is also showing their commitment to quality. Its current faculty of thirteen has four Ph.Ds, two doing their Ph.Ds, four with M.Tech/ME/M.Phil degrees and only three with simple B.E/B.Tech degrees.

Even at this early stage of BIT’s recruiting, one may compare BIT with the following institute faculty to get an idea of where BIT is heading.

    Sir,

In UCE Burla CSE dept, , the updated faculty position is 1PhD(completed), 03 PhD(continuing- all on the verge of completion) and 02 M.Tech. Also 1Prof, 2 Reader and 3 lecturer will be recruited soon. Prof. and Reader must have PhDs. So it will take the Faculties having PhDs in the dept to 07(seven) and total faculty strength to 12. The department has already awarded 2 PhDs and 07 more are pursuing. The Dept. has started M.Tech. in CSE programme from last academic year.
The website upgradation is under progress. The new website will be http://www.vssut.ac.in

    Dear Mr. Baral,
with orissalinks site being taken as a reference by students/parents and general education enthusiasts as a reference point about the way education is moving in Orissa and you also being on the board of advisors to BIT, regular articles on BIT may seem as a conflict of interest on your part to people. Hence pls be judicious in it.

    regards
    Nitin

    Dear Sir,

Sorry to say but dont you think that BIT is advertising a lot more rather than the other colleges. But I salute you sir, The way BIT is advertising i hope its all the seats will be filled up by 6000-7000 GE rank in OJEE.
But.i know it is really a good college and i have visited its campus 2 times and read the web site completely.
It will work sir. Best of luck.

    Pls dont mind.

    Dear Prof Baral:
    1. BIT has given advertisement looking for Principal in newspapers 3 days back. How can a good Institute not have a Principal even till date?
    2. Will the US profs come back to India and lead the team here in person or manage it remotely?
    3. Is BIT having Management seats like other colleges or is 100% through counselling? What is the difference?
    4. Such comparision as you have done about PhD/MTech is not at all an indicator of excellence; many low quality colleges have more PhD/M.Tech than you have mentioned.

  • 8. Chitta Baral  |  July 15th, 2009 at 8:07 pm

    Dear Mr. Surjeet:

    You have very good points.

BIT is a new college. So it is yet to prove itself.

My impressions are based on knowing the people involved in it and seeing their dedication. Some of the US based professors have already spent fair amount of time in Bhubaneswar making this college.. The Chairman (Prof. Rabi Mohapatra) must have made 3 trips a year for last 2-3 years trying to make this. US professors can take sabbatical of up to 1 year every 6 years. I think some of the founders may take advantage of that.

Two of the recent hires of BIT the COO Ashok Mohapatra and Prof. Piyu Nayak shifted from US/abroad to this institute.

Having said all that it is still a new college with no track record. But, students who take a chance this year have a high chance of lucking out.

On the industry side, there is one name that is hidden. One Mr. Mishra, a WIPRO VP, is part of it through … I won’t say more on that.

In regards to advertising for a principal, they already have one for months (before the institute started). Why they are advertising again I do not fully know. Perhaps the principal needed to oversee before a institute is started needs to have a different qualification than one needed after.

Hello sir, this is Pratik Pattanayak. I have completed my B.Tech from NIT Rourkela in 2009. i want to apply for faculty at Bhubaneswar Institute of technology for the upcoming session. if vacancy and the institute permits i want to pursue my career at BIT.BIT has taken a giant leap in the field of technology by promising to provide higher education or further studies to the best graduates of the institute. in todays world of economic slowdown we need good graduates with high qualifications to help the world tackle this. lot of colleges in orissa admits to provide 100% placement. but that doesn’t matter. we should judge an institute not by what percentage of students placed but by how many stuedents are opting for higher education. this is one of the most commendable effort by BIT, which carries the name of the capital city will obviously make us proud in near future. with due regards i want to state that i’ll be delighted to join such an institute.
thanking you. i’ll be looking forward for your kind suggestions.
