Progress in regards to NISER

January 20th, 2007

I was in India during December 12th-Jan 13th. Hence the long hiatus. Part of this time I was not able to access this site. I will slowly start positing on various things that happened since my last posting.

There has been very good progress in the NISER front. A web page for it has been created. Although Dr. Viyogi, the director of Institute of Physics has the official charge of NISER, it seems he has delegated the task to Prof. Jnana Maharana. Prof. Maharana consulted several international scientists, including some Nobel prize winners, and with the help of scienists such as Prof. Nayak (in Biology) from IISc Bangalore and Professor. Gadadhar Mishra (in Mathematics) of ISI Bangalore has prepared various documents for NISER.

On January 17th Dr. Anil Kakodkar, the DAE Chairman, visited Bhubaneswar and saw the shotilisted locations for the NISER and met the Chief Minister. Reporting on his visit Samaja mentions [page1, page2] that NISER’s budget is 750 crores over 7 years. (Earlier the number mentioned was 560 crores over 7 years. Note that the IISER budgets were reported to be 500 crores each, some reports saying it to be over 5 years while the HRD annual report saying it to be over 7 years.) Most newspapers covered this visit including New Indian Express and Pioneer. They all reported that the NISER classes will start in July 2007 and that NISER will initially have schools in Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences and in the future will have schools in additional subjects such as Computer Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences and Engineering Sciences.
