ESIC Medical college in Rourkela; latest news

October 5th, 2009

Update: Various trade unions and local organizations in Rourkela have signed a joint memorandum. The details are at:  http://www.odiasamaja.org/esic-medical-college-trade-unions-variour-organizations-support/

Following is an excerpt from a report in Pioneer.

Hundreds of e-mails reached the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) urging him to impress upon the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) for establishment of the college and hospital in the steel city. The Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Labour were flooded with mails and memorandums. Bur it seems nobody in the Government is bothered about the hue and cry raised by the people from various sections of the society.

“If there is any place fit for an ESIC Medical College & Hospital, it is Rourkela,” said a top Orissa Government official. Then how come the Government is silent over the demand and has allowed the ESIC to set up the college and hospital in Bhubaneswar? “You better ask the Chief Minister,” said the officer on the condition of anonymity. Now, as the ESIC has been allotted land on the outskirts of the capital city, chances of Rourkela seem remote, admitted the official.

Interestingly, when the people of Rourkela joined the bandwagon for demanding the medical college and hospital in the steel city, local MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak, who is the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Welfare remained silent. Similarly, Minister for Labour and Employment Puspendra Singh Deo, who also hails from Western Orissa, quietly favoured the college to come up in Bhubaneswar.

The ESIC will spend Rs 600 crore for the medical college and hospital, a dental college and a nursing college in the same campus, said sources. Officials point out that as there is no full-fledged airport near Rourkela, the Centre will not agree to setting up of a medical college there.

The mention about Rourkela not having airport and hence center may not agree is bogus. I don’t see any connection betweem an airport and an ESIC medical college. Indeed two other locations where ESIC medical colleges are being established do not have a nearby airport either. They are Gulbarga, Karnataka and Alwar, Rajasthan. (Thanks to Prashant babu for pointing to  the second one.)

NIT IS ALSO CENTRAL FUNDED INSTITUTION. IF THERE IS NO AIR CONNECTIVITY OF ROURKELA HOW CENTRAL GOVT. IS GRANTED NIT ROURKELA. IT IS ONLY EXCUSE BY STATE GOVT. BUT THIS EXCUSE IS NOT EFFECT TO ROURKELA PEOPLES.

THE STATE GOVT. AND ROURKELA GOVT. SHOULD COME FORWARD TO SHIFT THE ESIC HOSPITAL AND COLLEGE TO ROURKELA.AFTER THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOSPITAL THE AIR PORT AT ROURKELA WILL BE AUTOMETICALLY OPERATIONAL.OTHERWISE THE SAME SITUATION LIKE MAHARASHTRA WILL BE THERE WHERE THE CITIES LIKE MUMBAI & PUNE ARE HIGHLY DEVELOPED WHERE AS THE REST OF THE STATE IS STILL IN THE WAY OF DEVELOPEMENT.ORISSA GOVT SHOULD BE VERY CAREFULL REGARDING THIS CONTEXT.BHUBANESWAR HAS ALREADY MORE OVER 5 MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITALS WHERE AS THE SECOND METRO CITY OF THE STATE DO NOT HAVE A MEDICAL COLLEGE.THIS IS 100% UNFAIR FOR THE CITY POPULATION OF OVER 6LAKHS AS WELL AS THE ROURKELA ADMINISTARATION.I WOULD REQUEST OUR CM TO REVISE HIS DECISION.

Hi guys..got to know that ESIC revolution at Rourkela is going on full swing.Even the CM is now aware how serious are the people at Rourkela.the Rourkela chamber of commerce.CITU and other prominent politician are supporting the cause but Mr Sarda nayak is nowhere.I dont know why.even i tried to get hold of him by calling on his cell but its switched off. Then i knew from this website that he is avoiding to talk on the ESIC matter. Now if a prominent personality is avoiding such sensitive matters then whats the point to vote for him.well without wasting any time please let me know who else we can contact so that EOD we are getting a positive result.I hope all our efforts dont go wasted. The new update for now is IIIT at BBSR.And the CM says he wants to make Orissa a hub for world class institutions.Mr CM i beg you pardon its not Orissa its just the BBSR region. Please tell the truth. You have lined up 5 medical colleges for BBSR region and still you need more. You are least concerned about any other region.Every time you go to delhi you make a demand for BBSR and not for orissa.Lets stop this and your capital centric attitude or we are quite close to have an impression of separate state…

Requirement of Medical College in Rourkela should be 1st priority. This can help Rourkela to go to a new way. Rourkela is the 2nd big city after Bhubanewwar. Minister should think about the advancement of Orissa from all corners. Its a basic necessity. Politics should kept aside is this matter. Hope they will understand soon.

ESIC, BPUT capus, municipal corporation, rail division, flegged airport( an airstrip exist), etc etc and there are much more demands as well as requireds for Rourkela. A talk was there in Odiya “HELA TA HELA, NAHELE ROURKELA” .But now ” ROURKELA SARBADA HEUCHHI ABAHELA”. If this is true there is an only alternative for all problems…..
