Orissa’s dismal performance in IIT entrance examinations; no one cares

July 16th, 2007

The Telegraph has an article titled "IIT wake-up bell for backbencher Bengal" where it rues the low performance of students from Bengal in the IIT entrance exams. It concludes with: "Fewer students from Bengal in the IITs and IIMs mean fewer decision makers of tomorrow from Bengal." Orissa has been doing much worse than Bengal, but hardly anyone in Orissa is worried about it. Its time decision makers in Orissa, start worrying about it and taking corrective actions.

Yes. I agree. Our Higher Secondary system needs to be revamped to match with the all India level entrance tests. West Bengal Govt. is trying it and the results are encouraging. The +2 education system in Orissa is more in line with NCERT curriculum when compared to WB Higher Secondary Board. Hence, it should be possible.

Anyway, a number of coaching centers (some with all India presence) have mushroomed in Orissa. I fondly hope that they will deliver some good results.

The problem is not with the curriculum because students from the state irrespective of their background (State Board/CBSE/ICSE) have performed badly in IIT JEE. The attitude of students and teachers in the state is the main cause of this dismal performance.Very few teachers encourage their students to crack IIT.The students are made to believe that it is almost impossible to crack the IIT JEE.Most of the students aim for the state JEE or AIEEE. States like Maharashtra and Andhra have much easier syllabus but they manage to get large number of seats.

IIT JEE has undergone a lot of change since earliar days. From my time, one of the key observations I had was Lecturers used to distinguish between IIT and +2.

Everybody used to think that IIT cannot be cracked..Even students who aimed for it were not given proper support.

The need right now, is to get a pool of students through a scholarship exam and then train them using professional instructors possibly like ex-professors from IIT.
