IIIT Bhubaneswar should offer weekend M.Tech for Engineering College faculty

August 4th, 2007

To improve the quality of engineering colleges in Orissa, IIIT Bhubaneswar should offer weekend M.tech for Engineering College faculty. This will be similar to weekend MBAs offered to working  executives at many universities in the USA. To encourage the private engineering colleges to send their faculty for M.Tech  Orissa government and BPUT should decide the fees amount based on how many faculty with M.tech (or pursuing M.tech) or more a particular college has.

Thats a brilliant idea. In that case, IIIT,Bbsr will be a boon to hundreds of faculties of various govt. n pvt. engg colleges.

Most of the faculties, appointed, dont hav a m.tech degree, which is a requirement of a lect. in any engg college.

Weekend m.tech course, will certainly help them, earn them a masters degree and other job prospects.

Steps must be taken to implement the same.

its a bad idea. M.Tech course is not comparable to MBAs. No university in US provided MS program on weekends. If you want to do masters degree then we must leave the job and do a full time mtech. What will be the quality of a weekend M.tech? No university in India provides a weekend and distance M.tech and it is not permitted by AICTE.

Just because no body has done it, .. I guess we always want to follow and not lead; not do something innovative but only copy. There are concerns. But it should be tried and if it does not work then it can be stopped. But not trying .. and always trying to follow and copy …

IIIT has been established as a full time research institute while maintaining international standard. Soon it is going to apply for a deemed university status. Its main thrust is full time cutting edge research which cannot be diluted by providing part time or weekend courses. No where in this world engineering education is provided in weekend or part time basic. Its not about copy its about quality. how can be a weekend mtech comparable to a full time mtech. India has many engineering college but all college does not produce quality graduates. why not learn and follow the good things about US university and how they produce so many research paper. thats what education reforms all about which new HRD minister is going to implement. Doing a weekend mtech is not innovation its a shortcut to get a research degree and ruining the value of masters degree in India, Goverment has implemented many schemes for lecturers to do mtech like QIP. An international level institute should not offer a weekend mtech. Its a BAD idea and IIIT bhubanewar is not the first IIIT. There are several IIITs in the country and no IIIT offers even a part time M.tech. so where is the question of weekend M.Tech????????????

Just because other IIITs are not doing something IIIT Bubaneswar need not necessarily follow them. Institutions need to think on their own and sometimes they may not be right but new things must be tried. Its better to be an innovator and risk losing once in a while than to conservatively follow the norm.

Let me elaborate on how an M.Tech in weekends may work and why it is needed.

    First Why?

There is a severe lack of qualified people to teach in the thousands of engineering colleges across the country. Bhubaneswar itself now has 60 colleges. Many of these engineering colleges are forced to hire mere B.techs to teach. Now if there is a way for these teachers to earn a higher degree that would be helpful.

But they often can not leave their job completely to do an M.tech and oftentimes their management may not give them leave.

Hence the idea of M.Tech in weekend or evenings. Although the weekend idea may be new in the M.Tech context, in the US many people do part-time MS degrees by taking classes in the evening. Often they take less classes and it takes them longer but they do.

The suggestion was to expand this idea to weekends. Now the teachers can take classes in weekends (and evenings) and earn their M.tech. They can do this a bit slowly, say 1-2 classes a semester instead of 3-4 classes/semester and finish it in 2.5 – 3 years instead of 1.5-2 years.

I don’t see what are possible problems with this. If there are some, I think they can be overcome.

Its an innovative idea for ORISSA , It will make a mile stone to persue Higer Study in Orissa.

Apart from Comp Sc. Other Weekend or evening Courses will hlep us . Some other branches like Elect. & Telecomm., IT , Bio Informatics , Electrical Engg. & Mechatronics Engg. will also help us to get better knowledge on Post Graduate level.

As per Present status no college or university conscern about Higer Study in ORISSA. To encourage our students & research fellows regarding Higer study ORISSA Govt. Should take necessary action . Becoz for this we have to go out side orissa.

Utakl university is one of the top most University in India but there is also no such facility for Higher study in Engg. Technology . IIIT Bhubaneswar Should take the advantage & do needful for us.
