Odisha goverment must take timely steps to get one of the new IIITs in 2011-12
January 4th, 2011
Following is an excerpt from a report in Deccan Chronicle about efforts in Andhra Pradesh.
The Union HRD ministry has written to the state government, expressing its willingness to allot one IIIT to the state. It has asked for proposals to be submitted immediately.
In response to this, Mr Damodara Rajanarasimha, minister for higher and technical education, said: “We have convened a meeting with officials of higher and technical education departments to discuss the Centre’s proposal this week. Initially, we will identify the suitable cities and about 50 acres required for the purpose of setting up the institute. Based on this, we will submit a report to the UMHRD after shortlisting the location.”

The state govt should show its promptness to get the iiit @ berhampur in the first phase itself as other states have started lobbying for 2nd iits and central univs. Orissa must push for an iim and upgradation of an existing university into central university with all vigour to remain on the same footing compared to other states.

Orissa should bid for 2 IIIT one for Rourkela and the other for Berhampur. Berhampur as an IIIT location is not as attractive as Rourkela. If Orissa expects to attract decent professional, Berhampur has no advantage. The only location at this time other than Bhubaneswar that could attract candidates from all over India is Rourkela. You disagree, compare IIIT Hyderabad with IIIT Gwalior or Jabalpur.
Central University Koraput is going to languish and I hope Orissa government should not push Berhampur over Rourkela. In addition to Rourkela, it is OK to push for Berhampur bit not over Rourkela. Rourkela is the orphan city of Orissa.
