More details on the NITER proposal

September 10th, 2007

More details are emerging on the NITER proposal. It seems it is only an Orissa govt. proposal. So it is far away from happening.  At this point Orissa govt. should focus on getting one of the new IITs and should pursue NITER only after it gets an IIT. Following is a report on this from Samaja. (New Indian Express also has a report on it.)

Yes, I agree. Orissa Government should focus on IIT and we should continue lobbying till the very end. One should not get carried away by the easy way of setting up NITER thro’ DAE than by seemingly impossible task of getting IIT from HRD Ministry ( at least, till there is a change in Ministry). The idea of NITER should only be an add-on to NISER.

IIT for Orissa is non-negotiable. If the state government is able to put forward demands for other institutes without diluting the IIT cause then its good for the state but I believe we have a lot to learn about the negotiating skills. Andhra Pradesh and Kerala stand out as examples. While A.P is attracting lot of Proposals from corporate houses to establish educational institutes, Kerala has succeeded to extract an assurance for a railway package from non other than the P.M.
Also, in Orissa the requirements of other underdeveloped pockets have to be taken care of while putting forward the demands.
