Utkal University ranks at 21 in the 2011 India Today University rankings
September 21st, 2011
This ranking seems to be mainly based on perception and seems to me that the comparative assessment for Utkal University is a fair one and matches with my perception of the success achieved by Utkal University graduates.

Interestingly, the percentage of students from eastern India who opt to do ph. ds. is relatively high compared to other parts of India. If the perception is based on that then UU certainly deserves that ranking. However, I believe the opportuniities in Eastern India and particularly in Orissa and Bengal are very limited. So,the students find it hard to get placements unless they upgrade their degrees. While perception based ranking could be justified, it is not reflect the correct position. That apart who did the ranking and what were the parameters for ranking are very important considerations for one to believe in the ranking exercise. In my opinion education sector is extremely politicized and the appointments are made on considerations other than merit. In the past, Allahabad University for example, held many selection interviews on Sunday and Saturdays just to avoid court’s intervention. If this can be state of affairs in a central university the condition of state funded universities can be easily imagined.
