IIT issue rocks Orissa Legislative assembly (OLA)

March 30th, 2007

The IIT issue rocked OLA yesterday. Some BJP legislators were very vocal about it and said they were fed up with the central government’s negelect with respect to higher education locations. In jest, some even suggested that Orissa should have an economic blockade against the center as suggested by Biju Patnaik decades ago. Other members suggested that an assembly committee on this issue be formed and that committee visit the Prime minister on this issue. The proceedings of the assembly on the debate on IIT shifting is further reported in Tathya.in, New Indian Express and Samaja (in Oriya).

We proceed few steps at a time. In my mind the first priority is an IIT and a KBK Central University. Please note that from the budget outlay perspective new IITs are way ahead of the others. Some reports mention that for each new IIT the govt. plans to spend 4000 crores. The corresponding amount for an IISER is 500 crores and an IIM is less than 100 crores. Also an IIT can have a school/college of design as IIT Guwahati has. So, we do want all the things you mentioned but we have to strategize. If we ask too many things at a time, we may get only a few of the cheaper items.
