OSME degree course is imparted without any constructive frame.
The college lacks proper faculities, infrastructure and an effective head.
There is no placement for passed out students.
When there is lot of brain storming for Industrialisation process and a prosperous Qrissa, how such dismal functioning of an Engineering Institute
is acceptable?
It is surprising ideas take decades to translate in to action which is a ninteenth century process.

Dear Prof. Baral,
Please recall our meeting at BBSR in a conference organised by DTE&T Orissa sometimes during December 2006 in hotel Crown. It was about Education in Orissa probably. You were the centre of discussion that day. We had discussed many things about OSME & I was too much impressed and motivated. Later on I became Principal of OSME(Degree) specially posted to build the college. Honestly speaking, I tried my best to give a shape to it to bring upto National standard and also achieved a lot. But that much can never take it upto National standard. I stayed there for only one year.
Prof, you were my inspiration. I might have told not less than hundred persons who can appreciate things in the true spirit, about you who thinks about Orissa staying at a few thousand miles away.
The standard of Technical education in orissa is hopeless. The word “WORLD CLASS” is nothing less than a stupid joke. It is used by people who never know what education means. Most of the Govt. Institutions are with less than 50% staff strength. Laboratoris full of equipments but not functional. Equipments’ cost very high quality very low.
In most places no Lab work is done. To site a small example, the OSME(Degree) is at least 14 years old & Diploma is around 54 years. Do the Mining Dept. have labs as per norms ? Have the students ever done practical work. It may make you laugh that even the sudents are not doing the Survey practical which is probably the most important and primary work of a Mining Engineer forget about other labs.
There is a Drilling Dept., may be one of the 3 to 4 such institutes in India. What do they have ? Staff, Lab , Equipments, Books, even proper class room.
Its not that it cannot improve, but again; how it can ?This is only one example I could give as I was closely associated with it. I’m sorry, the situation would not be much better elsewhere.
Dear Prof, my objective of writing this is not to redicule my state but only a manifestation of the pain I carry in my heart. Though I am part this system I have experinced the troubles of being enthusiastic to see the thing only better, forget about “WORLD CLASS”.
I wish things really improve. Let us be of some standard first, then state level, than National level and then “WORLD CLASS”.
I appreciate your efforts sincerly wish your dreams of seeing Orissa at the top, comes true. Dhanyabad and Namaskar.
Your’s
GC Patro,
Dy. Dir(Scheme & Budget), O/o DTE&T Orissa.

Dear Mr Patro,
I’m thankful to your post highlighting the plight of technical education in general and the situation in OSME in particular.
I’m appalled to see the lackadaisical attitude of state government towards the state of technical education. The moot point is how can an institution in its infancy sustain itself without any government support.
The state government is starting new technical institutions like the one in Berhampur and in Bhawanipatna but is turning a blind eye to the problems of institutions like OSME.
Also there is another problem, i.e the lethargic attitude of the teaching and non teaching staff there. They have started to take things for granted and the students are left to fend for themselves.
No wonder private technical institutions are attracting the best talent for faculty and the best corporates for placements.
Mr Patro>> Why do you think the faculty has developed such a shabby attitude towards their job?

I was checking the site for the first time and saw all this write ups on the news article regarding OSME degree. As a first batch of OSME degree-1999 batch i thought to put few lines. When we stated up the degree stream there, we are the unwanted child of Goverment wich came into existance due to some whims and fancy of some minister or some beurocrat. I can imagine how hopelessly we struggled during than. That is a hystory, an when i read the write of Prof Patro, i can guess his frustration. Some time we dont know who is accountable for what. I think the institute has reached to that level. Fortunately after passing through some better national level institute i realize how institute shapes the charcter of a student who is supposed to become a responsible citizen of future. Where we are heading is a question mark now????
