RRL (Regional Research Laboratory) in Bhubaneswar “upgraded” to Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT)
March 31st, 2007
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) aims to provide scientific industrial R & D. It had many central, national and regional research laboratories, including a regional research laboratory (RRL) in Bhubaneswar. Since early March 2007 the name of all the five RRLs in Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Bhopal, Johrhat and Trivendrum have been changed.
- RRL Bhubaneswar‘s name has been changed to Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT).
- RRL Bhopal‘s name has been changed to Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI), Bhopal.
- RRL Jammu‘s name has been changed to Indian Institute of Integrated medicine (IIIM).
- RRL Trivendrum‘s name has been changed to National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIST).
- RRL Johrhat‘s name has been changed to North East Institute of Science and Technology.
There has not been any news reports on this name change except one. That news report suggests that in case of RRL Jammu the name change is associated with an upgradation. We believe that the same is true for the other RRLs (except perhaps Johrhat) including the one in Bhubaneswar. The name change makes it clear that they are no longer a regional institute but a full-fledged institute. Although there may not be any immediate change in budget allocation, by virtue of becoming a full-fledged institute each of the “upgraded” RRLs can now go for an agressive growth plan and be like the other institutes in the CSIR stable. The current list of CSIR institutes, from the CSIR web page, are as given below (network map) and the list no longer suggests that some labs are at a lower status than the others. (Earlier the phrase “regional” in RRL suggested them to be of lower status than the ones with “central” or “national” in their name.)
