Update on June 24, 2015: The Indian Cabinet has finalized Sambalpur as one of the 6 new IIMs. On other fronts: (i) the state government has proposed the center to upgrade VSSUT Burla to an IIEST and there are pronouncements by a central minister that the central government is positively inclined, and (ii) the upgradation of GM College to an university is progressing well (its new web page is functional and advertisement for admission to GM University has come out).
Since it will take some time before IIM Bhubaneswar has its own web page prospective IIM Bhubaneswar students may check the following pages for why they should chose IIM Bhubaneswar and Bhubaneswar. We will try to add some links and information there.
In a departure from the current trend in business education, the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) is opening its own university and taking away some of its courses from what it describes as a restrictive All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) accreditation process. This will allow it to impart “innovative courses”.
To be named Xavier’s University, the institution will start its first campus in Orissa’s Puri district, followed by two more campuses in Sambalpur and Balangir districts.
“The AICTE has a lot of restrictions when it comes to expansion,” XIMB director P.T. Joseph said over the telephone from Bhubaneswar. “Now, we have got a go-ahead from the state government to start our own university.”
… Joseph said the institute will spend about Rs70 crore in the first phase of the university plan, of which Rs20 crore will come from the state. While the first campus in Pipli, Puri, will be spread across 35 acres, the Sambalpur and Balangir campuses will be built on 25 acres and 15 acres, respectively. The university will be set up as a private one under the state’s rules, which means it will have more autonomy. “There will be more investment as we progress,” Joseph said.
… To start with, XIMB will offer students the rural management course without AICTE accreditation. “XIMB will remain as an institute under the AICTE umbrella. If they create problems, then we have to think otherwise. But we are taking our (two-year) rural management course to the university from next year when the university starts operation,” Joseph said. The institute will also run a master’s programme on public health in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. It will also offer its three-continent master of global management programme under the university.
XIMB’s plan is a smart way of tackling issues related to AICTE, said Pramath Sinha, founding dean of the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.
… Allowing serious players to open universities is creating an ecosystem that’s free of excessive control, he said. Sinha is planning to open a university in Haryana under the state’s laws.
Joseph said Xavier’s University will offer both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in areas such as environmental management, microfinance, healthcare management and disaster management. Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik will lay the foundation of the campus on Saturday, according to an official invitation.
The state will pass a legislation to open the private university soon and till that time XIMB will call them additional campuses, instead of a university, the institute’s spokesperson said.
It seems, besides PGDM, BIMTECH Bhubaneswar will be offering programs such as PGD in Mass Communication & Journalism, PGD in Communication Design and PGD in Industrial Design; all subject to AICTE approval.
… a push from the state government, cheap land prices, a pool of students from the neighbouring states of Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and the North East as well as investments by large corporate houses are slowly changing the eastern state’s identity. After Hyderabad, it is Odisha which is steadily becoming the focal point for educational institutes to set up their campuses.

… According to Dr Harivansh Chaturvedi, director BIMTECH, the saturation of b-schools in other states, low living costs and burgeoning middle class population of urban Odisha are some other reasons for b-schools to choose to come to the state.
The Odisha government has been cooperative in terms of allotting land at cheaper prices, say educational administrators. “The government is friendly and we were alloted 30 acres of land at the cost of Rs 8 lakhs per acre,” said Chaturvedi. This was in stark contrast to the price of land in neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, where, according to Chaturvedi, land prices can go upto Rs 2 crores for an acre. “We should not invest too much on physical infrastructure like land, as it is expensive,” added Chaturvedi.
… Harivansh Chaturvedi has answers for some of these doubts. “Our target is not just the local students, but the aim is to tap the pan-India market,” he said. “Also, in terms of competition we are looking at the future and within five years there is a possibility that the government might allow foreign universities to set foot in this part of the country.” BIMTECH and IMI are also not very worried about the initial years in terms of placements as their Delhi campuses will mentor the ones in Bhubaneshwar until they can stand on their own feet.
… Sri Sri University, which does not enjoy the reputation that IMI or BIMTECH have as far as business education is concerned, has other ways of getting their graduates jobs. “The ‘Art of Living’ community boasts of one of the largest corporate following,” informed Malaya Malla, marketing manager of the university. “The university has received strong commitments from corporates for offering summer projects and final placements.”

… Earlier, XIMB had entered into a partnership with two foreign B-schools — Antwerp Management School in Antwerp and Fordham Graduate School of Business in New York — to launch a “3-Continent Master of Global Management” (3C MGM) programme. The duration of the course is 12 months and it is scheduled to begin on September 1.
For this, 20 candidates each have been chosen from the continents of Asia (India and China), Europe and America. The students will spend four months at Antwerp B-school, XIMB and Fordham.
Of the 40 applicants who had applied for the course, which will cost around 39,750 Euros or Rs 30 lakhs, only one has been selected to be part of the group from India.
“The applicants found it difficult to secure bank loans since XIMB is neither a university nor recognised under the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). We are trying our best to attain the status of a university so that these problems do not recur,” said Joseph, who is also one of the deans for the 3C MGM programme.
After giving its nod to four privately promoted universities in the state, the Orissa government is set to table the Xavier University Bill in the ensuing monsoon session of the assembly.
Earlier, the state assembly had passed bills for setting up of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar University, Vedanta University, Icfai University and Centurion University of Technology & Management.
"We are making efforts to introduce the Xavier University Bill in the monsoon session of the assembly. All problems relating to the establishment of the university will be sorted out,” said state Chief Secretary B K Patnaik.
P T Joseph, director, Xavier Institute of Management-Bhubaneswar (XIMB) said, “We want the status of a unitary university. Our proposed second university is coming up on 35 acres of land at Jatani in Khurda district. Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Orissa (Idco) is in the process of building a compound wall which will be completed soon. Then, we will start construction work on this campus in August.”
Joseph said, initially, XIMB will invest Rs 10-12 crore in the current financial year on the second campus.
While the university will function from XIMB’s existing campus in the city, the rural management course will be shifted to the new campus. Besides the flagship Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), the new campus will offer courses like healthcare management, education management, human resource management and a doctoral programme in management for working executives.
… XIMB also has plans to set up a campus at Bolangir for the rural management course and a B-school at Sambalpur but details are yet to be finalized.
If this happens this will be the first Xavier University in India.

One can also pursue B.Sc (Hons) in Computer Science and M.Sc Computer Science in several institutions. SUIIT (Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology) also offers courses in IT that are not listed above.
… The Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jamshedpur has decided to set up its second campus in Hyderabad. An XLRI delegation had met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister in this regard. The government has agreed to allot 75 acre for the project near Jawahar Nagar, on the outskirts of the city and near the BITS Pilani campus.
The AP government had extended an invitation to the management institute to set up its campus in the state three years ago. The Chief Minister renewed the efforts by writing to XLRI. The XLRI governing board took the decision on September 4, 2010.
Nearly 1,00,000 students appear for the entrance examination of XLRI, which has just 240 seats to offer. With the proposed Hyderabad campus, the institute would augment the intake of students.
XLRI’s expansion in Hyderabad will be its first move toward expansion in India. Internationally, the institute already has a presence in Dubai and Singapore.
… IMT Hyderabad, the new B-school under the IMT umbrella, is all set to commence its first academic session in June 2011. This is the third B-school of the IMT Group in the country. The other B-schools under the IMT Group of Institutions are IMT Ghaziabad, IMT Nagpur, and IMT Dubai.
…Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai is counted amongst the top B-schools of the country. NMIMS is now setting up its new campus in Hyderabad on a 90-acre plot at Jadcherla by 2013. The institute is expected to build the first of its campus structures covering over 50,000 sq ft with 14 classrooms, library, computer and communication labs by mid 2013. The full time management, engineering and pharmacy programmes of the institute will start from the campus in the academic year 2014-15.
NMIMS has already laid the foundation stone of its Chandigarh Campus on October 12, 2009. The planned infrastructure would be taking shape at Saranpur Institutional Area, near Chandigarh.
… Ms. Savita Mahajan, Chief Executive, ISB Mohali, informed MBAUniverse.com that the work on the physical infrastructure of upcoming ISB Mohali is in progress. “The work on the new campus is in full force and we are expecting the campus to be ready by April 2012.”
Punjab Chief Minister, Sardar Parkash Singh Badal had laid the foundation stone for the new campus of the ISB in Mohali (Punjab) on August 11, 2010 marking the start of construction of the ISBs’ first campus outside Hyderabad.

The Admissions Committee for IMI Kolkata & Bhubaneswar has decided to give a higher emphasis on the academic performance during College and consistency in academic performance. For this reason the college cut-off (as an eligibility criterion) has been kept at 55%.
We would strongly urge you to apply. There is no application fee and the application can be done online. Once you go through the selections process, meet our team, etc. you will be in a position to take a more informed decision.
We have not decided on the CAT cutt-offs for calling applicants for interviews. If you are meeting the academic eligibility criterion (55% in graduation+60% in 12th and 10th standard) you should consider applying to the two programmes.
FAQ-9. Is it a residential programme?
A hostel with 250 well-furnished, residential rooms for students (including a separate facility for women) is available within the campus. A stay in the hostel is not compulsory. However students are encouraged to stay in the hostel in the second year of the programme to take advantage of out-side the class room learning through participation in group work and other extra-curricular activities.

The Foundation Stone for the 30 acre campus of BIMTECH was laid by Smt. Jayashree Mohta, Vice Chairperson of Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Kolkata and Director, Jay Shree Tea Ltd.
On this occasion, addressing the gathering and mediapersons, Smt. Mohta said, “The Bhubaneswar Campus of BIMTECH will provide post-graduate and doctoral education in management, design, social sciences and law. If indeed BIMTECH wants to offer courses in design, social sciences, and law other than management, then the state government should give it more land and offer it to make a state university.
I have a feeling that both IMI and BIMTECH in Bhubaneswar will be huge boon for us.

When asked to design the IMI campus at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, we decided at first to learn the ‘City of Temples’, to let it speak to us. And….. it spoke like never before!
The temples with their rich architecture, atypical to any other in India, and sanctity had us overwhelmed.
The primitive rock cut cave architecture took us back in time.
The sculptural motifs left us breathless with their majesty, beauty and attention to detail.
The gardens, statues and fountains beckoned to us invitingly.
We took solace from the heat under extended roofs and traditional courtyards.
We found an architecture which had risen from the native soil – sacred and pure.
We found one of those rare places where tradition matches its steps with modernity, where culture and technology flourish together, where the glorious past is preserved and an illustrious future is in the making.
We finally understood what the city was trying to tell us.
The challenge lay in fusing the rich heritage and traditional elements in a modern setting.
And then we created – for the city and for the purpose.
For the purpose
The site is located in an extreme tropical climate on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, about 14 kms from the city centre. The campus is to be built in three phases. The planning is done such that phase II & III construction, will not interfere with the daily happenings of the institute or residential facilities.
The site was broadly zoned according to site constraints and function, allowing for easy vehicular movement and short distance pedestrian movement. The academic block is placed between the student hostels and faculty residences acting as a buffer between them as well as making it easily accessible to both areas.
Keeping in mind the extreme summer conditions, the structures have been designed and oriented on site to minimize heat gain and reduce the use of electromechanical energy.
Interactive zones where students can spill out, unwind, celebrate or just be inspired are a very essential part of campus design. The main interactive zone has been designed as a central plaza of the academic block. A shaded walkway connects the plaza to the hostels, creating a strong visual link between the two. Other smaller zones have been designed at nodal points.
For the city
Although the design of the institute is very modern a conscious effort has been made to fuse into the concept some of the local influences. The curved façade of the library building in the academic block will have sculptures, replicated from Khandagiri caves, in stone embedded into the façade. As one views the academic block, one sees a modern design reinforced with the traditional. The beauty of the sculptures will leave the viewer speechless as one is reminded of the rich culture and history of the state.
The traditional courtyard here is in the form of a central stepped plaza, designed using solid laterite blocks, locally available in Orissa, which leads to a water body. Keeping the climatic factors in mind, the central water court acts as a natural exhaust cooling the air passing over it making the middle court a solace in the hot summer.
Large overhanging roofs, pergolas, colonnades are some of the traditional elements which have been used in the design.
A combination of brick cladding and painted surfaces have been used throughout the campus, giving it a very earthy and sobering feel especially in the summer.
A strong vertical axis is created in the form of a tower as a feature element, with a visibility from 3kms away, making the campus a landmark in the surrounding areas.
This design is a confluence of the traditional with the modern, where we allow the past to catch up with us, remind us where we come from, while taking a leap into the future.
As famous architect Frank O. Gehry said ‘Architecture should speak for its time and place, but yearn for timelessness’, we attempt to do just that.
