Prof. Nayak is the product of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur was born at Berhampur in Ganjam district to a family of teachers.
An electrical engineer with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from IIM Bangalore did his Ph. D from IIT, Kharagpur.
He has done his Ph. D under the guidance of Prof. Damodar Acharya who was the Vice Chancellor of BPUT, Chairman of AICTE and at present the Director of IIT, Kharagpur.
Prof. Nayak has spent a few years on Industry.
He has worked for Nelco in Mumbai in the product development area and for NTPC in the Procurement automation area.
Prof. Nayak has spent about 20 years in academics.
He is one of the founding Professors of Xavier Institute of Management (XIMB), Bhubaneswar.
As the Professor of Information Systems, he was instrumental in transforming XIMB into the most technology intensive campus in India.
XIMBans give credit to him in creating several firsts management education field: a campus network, providing PC to each student, making Internet accessible 24×7 and giving a technology orientation to the curriculum at XIMB.
He held important positions at XIMB such as the Dean (Academics), IT services and Admissions Co-ordinator.
Prof. Nayak’s most notable contribution is development of Academic Information System (AIS) and PAMIS.
The AIS is being used by many top business schools in the country such as XLRI Jamshedpur, IIM Indore, NITIE Mumbai.
PAMIS has been implemented in 314 blocks and 30 DRDAs in Orissa and is one of the most successful e-governance projects in Orissa.
With this background the Government of Orissa has roped in Prof. Nayak for the IIIT.
With a director of such background IIIT Bhubaneswar should also start offering degrees that relate to business and information systems such as MBA and MIS (Master in Information Systems). One may note that some of the IIITs, such as IIITM Gwalior, do offer such degrees.

… IIM Calcutta (IIM-C) has decided to launch a programme on ‘leading and managing’ through HughesNet, across the country including Bhubaneswar.
The programme basically uses a modular approach to step outside your work situation and see how you affect your peer group.
Each module discusses an area of management and helps to use the fundamental principles of human behaviour to encourage employees to serve their own values while serving the goals of their department and the organisation, said a statement by HughesNet It is open for working executives with a minimum of 15 years experience and interested in moving to middle to senior positions within two to three years. IIM-C would be conducting a screening test to enrol candidates.
HughesNet, Bhubaneswar, would offer the programme for 120 students. The last date for forms to reach IIM-C is August 6. Classes would commence from second week of September.

Bhubaneswar based Regional College of Management plans a campus in Dubai. Business standard reports on this. Following are some excerpts.
Orissa’s oldest management college, Regional College of Management (RCM) is planning an overseas campus at Dubai. The campus, in all likelihood, would be set up by 2009 with an investment of Rs 10 crore.
… "Setting up of the Dubai campus is in an advanced stage of negotiation. We are confident it would fructify shortly", he added.
For setting up the Dubai campus, RCM authorities have already started teaching Arabic to students at the institute’s School of Languages. About 35-40 students are currently taking training in Arabic language to suit the requirements of Dubai.
RCM, meanwhile, has also started tying up with different Dubai-based firms for finding placements for students.
"Within the next two years we would comfortably be able to manage high placements in Dubai from our College," says Pal. These are mostly in the areas of retail management.
Alongside, RCM is planning to set up two management colleges at Jamshedpur and Delhi. This would take up an investment of Rs 10 crore. Pal said that the college already has an annual fund reserve of over Rs 5 crore. We would utilise the fund for the new colleges and the remaining would be sourced through bank loans.
… In Master of Computer Application (MCA) , RCM has achieved a 100% placement, with almost 85% of its students placed in top IT companies of Bangalore.

Finally the government has announced the fee structure for the various degrees. This has been reported in several places. Following are excerpts from the report in Tathya.in.
- The annual fee for private medical colleges has been proposed at Rs 4.5 lakh.
- For BDS degree announced fee structure is Rs.2.10 lakh per annum.
- The fees per year would range from Rs 32,000 to Rs 58,000 for different engineering colleges.
- ITER, Bhubaneswar, NIST ,Berhampur, GIE&T,Gunupur and SIT, Bhubaneswar will be charging Rs58,000 per annum.
- Lowest fee will be charged by PKACE, Bargarh, which is Rs32,000.
- For a MBA degree highest fee Rs. 90,000 will be charged by RCM, Bhubaneswar, RIMS, Rourkela and IPSR, Cuttack.
- KISD, Bhubaneswar will be charging lowest fee of Rs.40,000 for a management degree.
- In MCA a student has to cough out highest fee of Rs.75,000 in ITER, Bhubaneswar and lowest fee of Rs. 28,000 will be charged by BIET, Bhadrak.
- For a Pharmacy Program the highest fee structure is Rs.45, 000 and lowest is Rs.35,000.

I came across the following ad for the IIPM School of management, Rourkela. Its web URL is the same as that as of the Indian Institute of Production Management in Kansvahal. The later has been around for 24 years. According to an announcement in their web page this will be the first year of their MBA program. Based on their faculty list and their promoters (ICICI and L & T) this program should become a ranked program in the near future. Its not clear if the advertised IIPM school of management in Rourkela will be a program conducted in Kansvahal campus or they will build a new campus in Rourkela.
One other thing to note is that they are both different from the IIPM – Indian School of Planning and Management about which there is some controversy.

With new malls opening up in various places there is a lot of job opportunity in the areas of retail management and logistics. New Indian Express reports on this and about some business schools that offer courses on this topic. Following are some excerpts.
How about making a career in logistics? Industry estimates that the sector, going through acute manpower shortage, could create employment opportunities to the tune of 50,000 in the next five years.
The mushrooming malls and the expanding chain of retail stores on the neighbourhood are indicative of growing need of skilled hands.
With an annual growth rate of 25 percent, this is one sector that would see more and more avenues opening up in the times to come.
Gati, a leading player in the sector, has already offered placement letters to the first batch students of PG programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management being offered by city-based Asian School of Business Management (ASBM).
“Our aim is to hire graduates who intend to assume leadership positions in supply chain management and contribute to the competitiveness of the firms globally,” said managing director of company Mahendra Agarwal while giving away the letters and kicking off the programme on the ASBM campus here on Friday.
It is the first of its kind in the country and has been jointly designed by ASBM and Gati. Students would have the advantage of working in Gati’s warehouse for hands-on experience after 14 months of the course.
While 30 students have been enrolled in the first batch, the institute plans to raise the strength in the coming years.
So what would the sector expect from you? According to Agarwal – who was decorated with the ‘logistics man of India’ on the occasion – you ought to possess an analytical mind to succeed in this field.

Orissa JEE counseling brochure is now available in the web. Unfortunately it does not give any historical data regarding which ranks were able to get which branch and which college in the previous years. In comparison with the 2006 counselling brochure, the 2007 counseling brochure lists four new engineering colleges:
- Gandhi Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar [GIF] (this is besides the preexisting Gandhi Engineering College, Bhubaneswar [GEC]; GIET Gunupur [GIT]; and GITA Bhubaneswar [GIB])
- Nalanda institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar [NIT]
- Rajdhani Engineering College, Bhubaneswar [REC]
- Sundergarh Engineering College, Sundergarh [SUN]
and does not include
- Institute of Textile Technology, Choudwar [ITT]

Business Standard reports,
“Chennai Business School (CBS) has opened its campus in Bhubaneswar. For the moment, CBS would be offering two post graduate programmes in retail management ( PGPRM) and in management and insurance (PGPMI).
The duration of the courses would be of one year with a course fee of Rs 2.5 lakh per annum for PGPRM and Rs 1.25 lakh for PGPMI.”
“With opportunities available in future, CBS plans to introduce courses also in telecom, information technology (IT) and human resource (HR) management. The PGPMI being introduced by CBS is a job-assured programme where tie-ups have been worked out with ICICI Prudential Life.”
It further says, P K Mohapatra, chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), southern region, said, “Insurance varsities may also be set up in future in Bhubaneswar, Bangalore and Mumbai“.

Many may not know that there are two state government funded and one central government funded management-n-IT institutes in Orissa. (Here, we are not counting the management programs at the universities or the one proposed at NIT Rourkela.) The central govt funded management institute is Madhusudan institute of co-operative management. It offers MBA and DCA and many certificate courses. Following is a quote from its "About Us" pages.
The Madhusudan Institute of Co-operative Management (MICM) is one of the premier Management Institute of the state established in the year 1955-56. The MICM is functioning under the aegis of National Council for Co-operative Training (NCCT), New Delhi, being financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, (Department of Co-operation) Government of India. The basic objective of the Institute is to develop human resources for efficient management by organising various management training programmes.

You may recall that ICICI bank recently (on May 24th) signed an MOU with the Orissa government and also another one with Utkal University. The later was about starting courses whose graduates would most likely be hired by ICICI. They have moved fast and today there is an advertisement for a one year P.G. Diploma in Banking and Insurance Management offered by DDCE Utkal University in collaboration with ICICI bank. The filled forms, supposed to be available at a DDCE site (not available yet though), is due 20th June 2007 and the entrance exam to select 60 is on 1st July 2007.

For a background on Chennai Business School one may have a look at the Hindu Business line article of March 2006, which reports its starting in Chennai in 2006 by senior executives who were not happy that the existing business schools in India were using case studies mostly from abroad and were graduating students 70% of which were not employable.
