Yet another engineering college coming to Bhubaneswar

Indus College of Engineering has advertised for positions and mentions in its website that it has received letter of intent and waiting for letter of approval. Earlier we mentioned some of the other colleges that are listed in the BPUT 2007 counseling brochure for the first time. Indus does not appear there.

From the "about us" page of this college, I found out that it is being established by a trust led by Dr. Ravi Reddy. Dr. Reddy is a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D from University of Houston, USA. He was one of the main person at NIST, Berhampur. Based on this information, I think this will become a good  engineering college.

Regional College of Management plans campuses in Dubai, Jamshedpur and Delhi

Bhubaneswar based Regional College of Management plans a campus in Dubai. Business standard reports on this. Following are some excerpts.

Orissa’s oldest management college, Regional College of Management (RCM) is planning an overseas campus at Dubai. The campus, in all likelihood, would be set up by 2009 with an investment of Rs 10 crore.

… "Setting up of the Dubai campus is in an advanced stage of negotiation. We are confident it would fructify shortly", he added.

For setting up the Dubai campus, RCM authorities have already started teaching Arabic to students at the institute’s School of Languages. About 35-40 students are currently taking training in Arabic language to suit the requirements of Dubai.

RCM, meanwhile, has also started tying up with different Dubai-based firms for finding placements for students.

"Within the next two years we would comfortably be able to manage high placements in Dubai from our College," says Pal. These are mostly in the areas of retail management.

Alongside, RCM is planning to set up two management colleges at Jamshedpur and Delhi. This would take up an investment of Rs 10 crore. Pal said that the college already has an annual fund reserve of over Rs 5 crore. We would utilise the fund for the new colleges and the remaining would be sourced through bank loans.

… In Master of Computer Application (MCA) , RCM has achieved a 100% placement, with almost 85% of its students placed in top IT companies of Bangalore.

About: Orissa engineering colleges in the AICTE list and their number of seats (July 12 2007)

The following are some instructions about the previous posting titled "Orissa engineering colleges in the AICTE list and their number of seats (July 12 2007)."

It is from http://www.aicte.ernet.in/approval/engg_LIST/Orissa.doc (as of July 12 2007) reached via http://www.aicte.ernet.in/app_inst_new.htm after clicking the scrolling sentence in AICTE web page that says "Approval status 2007-08 as on 05-07-2007." The Orissa JEE counseling brochure has a few other colleges that are not in this list. For BPUT to put them in the Orissa JEE counseling brochure these colleges must have some sort of approval. Beyond that I can not guess why they are not in the latest AICTE list. Sometimes AICTE has multiple lists in its web pages. If people have doubts about these colleges they should ask BPUT to give them some written guarantee/proof regarding these colleges when counseling or during admission.

The last two columns of that article denote "Existing intake for 2006-07" and "Approved intake for 2007-08." Please note that they are not properly aligned. (I am having problems with the editor when copying and pasting from word documents.)

Two articles and a slide show on Vedanta University in the Chronicles of Higher Education

Chronicles of Higher Education has two premium articles ( one needs a subscription to read the full article) and a slide show. Following are links to those articles and excerpts from them.

  • Slide show with 11 nice pictures
  • Article 1: For Planners, the Opportunity of a Lifetime
    By LAWRENCE BIEMILLER
    Baltimore

In an office a few feet from the chop of the Baltimore harbor, architects are drawing plans for a vast university campus on the east coast of India that would be shaped like twin blossoms, bordered by a lake, and entered through any of 34 gates, each with its own name and symbolism. As beautiful as a mandala and as intricate as a postgraduate mathematics problem, it’s almost certainly the most ambitious campus plan ever conceived.

On more than 7,500 acres, Vedanta University and its environs would accommodate a liberal-arts program, an engineering school, an agriculture college, a medical campus, Olympics-grade sports facilities, townships for faculty and staff members, parklands, a resort, and even its own airport. At the behest of Anil Agarwal, an industrialist who has pledged $1-billion toward its construction, the campus is being designed to house 100,000 students and to fulfill the donor’s dream of creating an institution that is Indian and world-class at the same time. … MORE

  • Article 2: In Rural India, an Ambitious Academic Vision:

A mining mogul with big ideas is determined to build an elite, American-style university for 100,000 students in Orissa. Farmers, who own the land he wants to develop, plan to resist.

    By SHAILAJA NEELAKANTAN
    Bhubaneshwar, India

A few miles outside the town of Puri, in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, lies Beladala, a farming village of thatch-roofed homes. One recent afternoon a group of farmers sat on the porch of the village’s small school eating a lunch of rice, lentils, and vegetables on plates made of broad leaves. … MORE

KIIT plans an autism center at KIMS

Pragativadi reports that the KIIT foundation plans to establish an autism center at KIMS (Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences). Following are some excerpts from that report.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Nalini Menon, head of Rainbow Centre for Autism, Bangalore.

In his opening address, chancellor of KIIT University, Dr Achyut Samant said that KIMS would soon have a modern centre for treatment and research on autism to be set up under able guidance of Menon.

Stating that a majority of the patients from Orissa have to go to Bangalore for the treatment of this disorder, Dr Samant said that the proposed autism centre at KIMS would be immensely beneficial for the patients as we as researchers in the field.

Addressing the workshop, Prof Menon said that Autism is not localised in India but prevalent in all parts of the world.

In his speech, Dr Kailash Chandra Panda, former principal of the Regional Institute of Education, said that autism is a pervasive developmental neurological disorder, which is detectable from age of three onwards in affected children.

The proposed autism center at KIMS would be the first of its kind in the state, he informed.

Opportunities in retail management and logistics

With new malls opening up in various places there is a lot of job opportunity in the areas of retail management and logistics. New Indian Express reports on this and about some business schools that offer courses on this topic. Following are some excerpts.

How about making a career in logistics? Industry estimates that the sector, going through acute manpower shortage, could create employment opportunities to the tune of 50,000 in the next five years.

The mushrooming malls and the expanding chain of retail stores on the neighbourhood are indicative of growing need of skilled hands.

With an annual growth rate of 25 percent, this is one sector that would see more and more avenues opening up in the times to come.

Gati, a leading player in the sector, has already offered placement letters to the first batch students of PG programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management being offered by city-based Asian School of Business Management (ASBM).

“Our aim is to hire graduates who intend to assume leadership positions in supply chain management and contribute to the competitiveness of the firms globally,” said managing director of company Mahendra Agarwal while giving away the letters and kicking off the programme on the ASBM campus here on Friday.

It is the first of its kind in the country and has been jointly designed by ASBM and Gati. Students would have the advantage of working in Gati’s warehouse for hands-on experience after 14 months of the course.

While 30 students have been enrolled in the first batch, the institute plans to raise the strength in the coming years.

So what would the sector expect from you? According to Agarwal – who was decorated with the ‘logistics man of India’ on the occasion – you ought to possess an analytical mind to succeed in this field.
