Orissa JEE (AIEEE etc.) second round counseling on Sept 4th and 5th

Dharitri and Sambada report that the Department of Industries, Government of Orissa has a notification that the second round of JEE counseling will be done during September 4th and 5th. Neither article says where. Tathya.in has many reports on the reason behind the delay. Following are from Sambada and Dharitri, respectively.

BPUT, Orissa JEE Cordinators and the responsible Orissa government officials have created a mess

The initial vice chancellor of BPUT was Prof. Damodar Acharya, whose success in having a fixed non-negotiable semester schedule for colleges under BPUT, brought him and BPUT a lot of kudos and he went on to become the AICTE Chair and now the director of IIT Kharagpur. Since then BPUT’s functioning has seen a decline. But this year the functioning of BPUT and Orissa JEE  has reached the lowest point. While  classes have already started for students admitted during the initial counseling phase, the second counseling is yet to start. The lastest news (as of writing this) in the Orissa JEE website says the following:

Due to some unavoidable circumstances
it is not possible to publish the venue and schedule of counselling
for vacant NRI / JEE and AIEEE / AIPMEE / AIPDEE quota seats on 25/08/2007.
However, the same will be published shortly.

Tathya.in has some behind the scene news. I suggest that the students frustrated by this write to the Chief Minister and the Industry Secretary. Ultimately they are the ones responsible for this mess. The Orissa govt. web page is http://orissagov.nic.in/ from where you can find the email addresses of the CM and the industry secretary. BPUT web page is http://www.bput.org/  which has some contact email addresses. Although one can blow off steam by writing in the comments section of this blog, I am not sure if any of the responsible person (CMO, Industry Secretary or BPUT officials) read these pages. May be writing to them directly (in a polite manner) will let them know how their inaction and mishandling is frustrating many students. Writing comments in Tathya.in may have some impact as many of the news items in Tathya.in are picked up by other media. For example, the Tathya.in article about student’s frustration appears in a slightly edited form in Pioneer (the link will disappear in a  day though). Following is a screen copy.

MBBS and BDS seats available under all India Quota

Following is from a PIB press release.

The information regarding number of MBBS/BDS seats available under All India Quota-2007 in the various States can be seen at Annexure-I.

The first round of counseling for allotment of MBBS/BDS seats under 15% All India Quota-2007 was held from 15.06.2007 to 26.06.2007 and the second round of counselling was held from 27.07.2007 to 07.08.2007.  During the first round of counselling, 1520 MBBS seats and 161 BDS seats were allotted and during the second round of counselling 656 MBBS seats and 114 BDS seats were re-allotted/allotted to the merit/wait list candidates.  Out of these, 303 MBBS seats and 73 BDS seats were received as vacant from various colleges due to non-joining/resignation etc. of candidates who were allotted seats during 1st round of counselling.   And remaining 353 MBBS seats and 41 BDS seats were added in view of increasing in seat capacity in the existing colleges and establishment of new colleges.

All the 1520 MBBS and 161 BDS seats were allotted in 1st round of counselling.  However, 303 MBBS and 73 BDS seats fell vacant on account of non-joining/resignation of the candidates who were allotted seats during first round of counseling.  These seats were re-allotted/allotted to the candidates participated in the 2nd round of counselling.

After completion of both rounds of counselling, no MBBS/BDS seats remained vacant during the previous year.  All the MBBS/BDS seats available have been allotted to the candidates in the 15% All IndiaQuota-2006.  However, as per the information received from various States/Colleges, a total of 66 MBBS and 51 BDS seats of 15% All India Quota-2006 were reverted to State Quota during the previous year.  A list of such reverted seats to State Quota can be seen at Annexure-II.

As per the ‘Scheme’ devised and approved by the Hon’ble Supreme Court there is no provision for 3rd round of counselling or extended 2nd round of counselling.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Smt. Panabaka Lakshmi in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

Samaja: Additional JEE list for leftover seats in Engineering, MBA, etc.

Samaja reports that BPUT will soon come up with an additional list and do additional round of counseling for that list to fill-up the left-over seats in Engineering, MBA etc.  It says that out of a total 14,600 seats in engineering, of the 10,642 seats earmarked for JEE, 251 seats are left. Similarly, for MBA, out of 2500 seats, 1406 are earmarked for JEE and out of that 517 seats are left. In MBBS among the 300 seats in the private medical colleges, 210 are earmarked for JEE, and 143 seats are left. In architecture out of 119 seats 90 are left over. In BDS (dental) out of 350 seats 325 are left.

On AIEEE it mentions that the government will soon come up with the schedule. For AIEEE there are 2250 engineering seats, 325 MBA seats, 154 pharmacy seats, 325 MCA seats, 18 architect seats, 18 hotel management seats, 45 MBBS seats and 45 BDS seats.

In addition 15% seats are reserved for NRIs and they will be charged 4 times the amount charged for regular seats.

Observations:

  1. Orissa does not have enough rich families that can afford to send their kids to private medical colleges.
  2. Thus there is a need for more government medical colleges.
  3. Among the private medical colleges the order of preference seems to be KIMS followed by IMS followed by Hi-Tech. Its interesting that among these three Hi-Tech is the oldest and the other two only got MCI approval this year. However the other two are either part of or associated with deemed universities.
