Joining Orissa engineering colleges through AIEEE will entail the same fees as through Orissa JEE

New Indian Express reports on this. Following are some excerpts.

The fee structure meant for the JEE would also apply to AIEEE candidates. There will be no separate fee structure for the candidates seeking admission through the AIEEE route, …

The fees for different professional programmes, recommended by Fee Structure Committee and notified by the State Government on July 12, covers them too, he said.

He also informed that the Policy Planning Body (PPB) will decide the details of the counselling for the AIEEE candidates soon. Meanwhile, the State Government has also recommended that each college would submit an affidavit before the Fee Structure Committee stating that they will follow the structure approved by the Government and agreed upon by them.

…, there is also a growing feeling that individual colleges must issue declarations in public on their own stating that they will charge fees as has been jointly decided by them and the committee. It will be an act of self-regulation on their part.

About: Orissa engineering colleges in the AICTE list and their number of seats (July 12 2007)

The following are some instructions about the previous posting titled "Orissa engineering colleges in the AICTE list and their number of seats (July 12 2007)."

It is from http://www.aicte.ernet.in/approval/engg_LIST/Orissa.doc (as of July 12 2007) reached via http://www.aicte.ernet.in/app_inst_new.htm after clicking the scrolling sentence in AICTE web page that says "Approval status 2007-08 as on 05-07-2007." The Orissa JEE counseling brochure has a few other colleges that are not in this list. For BPUT to put them in the Orissa JEE counseling brochure these colleges must have some sort of approval. Beyond that I can not guess why they are not in the latest AICTE list. Sometimes AICTE has multiple lists in its web pages. If people have doubts about these colleges they should ask BPUT to give them some written guarantee/proof regarding these colleges when counseling or during admission.

The last two columns of that article denote "Existing intake for 2006-07" and "Approved intake for 2007-08." Please note that they are not properly aligned. (I am having problems with the editor when copying and pasting from word documents.)

Orissa JEE counseling brochure is available now

(Update on June 17 2008:  For guidance on what you can get with your Orissa JEE rank in 2008, please see https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/1185 I do not have more information than that.)

Orissa JEE counseling brochure is now available in the web. Unfortunately it does not give any historical data regarding which ranks were able to get which branch and which college in the previous years. In comparison with the 2006 counselling brochure, the 2007 counseling brochure lists four new engineering colleges:

  • Gandhi Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar [GIF] (this is besides the preexisting Gandhi Engineering College, Bhubaneswar [GEC]; GIET Gunupur [GIT]; and GITA Bhubaneswar [GIB])
  • Nalanda institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar [NIT]
  • Rajdhani Engineering College, Bhubaneswar [REC]
  • Sundergarh Engineering College, Sundergarh [SUN]

and does not include

  • Institute of Textile Technology, Choudwar [ITT]

2004 data on Orissa JEE and Orissa engineering colleges: can’t understand it completely

Many of the readers have been asking about what field and what college they can get with their rank. I have maintained that I really do not know the answer. Today while digging around I came across a repository (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that shows the various students and their ranks that got admitted to various colleges in Orissa in 2004 and only CET data for 2005. So this data is three years old. Nevertheless, it may give some guidance. Note that Since 2004 many new colleges have been made, KIIT has become a deemed university and many colleges have more seats now.

Moreover the data reflects the students in these college months after the counseling. So it is not the data after the first counseling. Normally after the first counseling many students may not join the institute and go to NIT, IIT or some other out of state college.

Orissa JEE has released additional rankings

The Orissa JEE has come out with an additional list and ranking of students beyond the initial 21455 ranks. See details in the Orissa JEE page. Here is what it says:

ATTENTION: ORISSA JEE 07 APPEARED CANDIDATES FOR ENGINEERING STREAM ADDITIONAL LIST of QUALIFIED CANDIDATES in ENGINEERING for ADMISSION into PRIVATE COLLEGES only.
The ORISSA JEE qualified candidates featuring in this additional list ( i.e. starting from Rank No. 21546 downwards ) will have to seek admission through the College Level only and not through the centralized counseling-cum-admission process of the JEE – 07.

New Indian Express has a nice report on this with additional information.

Ranking of Orissa Engineering Colleges based on student preferences

(Update on June 17 2008:  For guidance on what you can get with your Orissa JEE rank in 2008, please see https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/1185 I do not have more information than that.)

During the last two years I ranked various engineering colleges in Orissa based on the student preferences during BPUT’s counselling. In the following I will list the top 10 for 2006 and 2005. However, I must stress that proper rankings can only be done by using several parameters: student preference, opinions of companies, faculty quality, facilities etc. So my ranking based on only one criteria is flawed. But thats all the data that I have handy. So don’t take this ranking as gospel. Please use other channels to get more information on various colleges, such as their web pages.

2006 Top 10: (complete ranking with details on methodology) Not Considered: NIT Rourkela and KIIT Bhubaneswar as their 2006 admission is not through BPUT.

  • 1. CET, Bhubaneswar (govt.)
  • 2. UCE, Burla (govt.)
  • 3. ITER, Bhubaneswar

  • 7. IGIT, Sarang (govt.)
  • 8. Orissa Engineering College, Bhubaneswar
  • 9. GIET, Gunupur
  • 10. Gandhi Institute, Bhubaneswar
  • …19. Orissa School of Mines, Keonjhar (govt.)
  • … 37. Institue of Textile Technology, Choudwar (govt.)
2005 Top 10 (complete ranking with details on methodology)

Not Considered: NIT Rourkela as its 2005 admission was not through BPUT.

  • 1. CET, Bhubaneswar (govt.)
  • 2. UCE, Burla (govt.)
  • 3. ITER, Bhubaneswar
  • 4. NIST, Berhampur

NISER Bhubaneswar brochure and application form

These days the NISER, Bhubaneswar website seems to be very slow. We are putting a copy of their application form and information brochure in another location so that people having a hard time downloading it from NISER website can down load it from here (application form, information brochure). Both can be also obtained from the Homi Bhabha site of NISERNEST.
Please note that the last date of receipt of application form is June 8′ 2007.

Following is my archive of the NISER web pages as archived on April 25′ 2007.

NISER will share its entrance exam with UM-DAE

Fiver year integrated M.Sc programs are being started at UM-DAE, a new autonomous center for excellence in Basic Sciences jointly set up by University of Mumbai in collaboration with Dept. of Atomic Energy. It will be taught by faculty from nearby institutes such as IIT Bombay, BARC, Univ. of Mumbai and TIFR. The entrance exam for this program is the same one as for NISER, Bhubaneswar. So in a sense, NISER now has head-to-head competition in terms of students. Unless NISER moves quickly and uses its funding advantage to build a nice campus and hire top-notch faculty it may lose out.
