An international airport in the city could do wonders for a number of industries such as tourism, IT and manufacturing. As of now for well heeled travelers coming to Bhubaneswar from abroad means a stopover at Kolkata or Hyderabad. This stopover at Kolkata/Hyderabad means lost time, energy and additional expenses which could be easily avoided.
Nowadays for any city to be on the global map an international is a necessity. Perhaps more than anything else the Naveen Patnaik government would do well to get this off the ground. Just 2 international flights a week to the city to start with could lead to multiplier effect in various areas. It’s actually essential to up the ante on this neglected area but most important area.
International status for airport soon
Special Correspondent
Favourable reply to Rosaiah’s letter to Union Ministry likely next month
International flights may very soon begin to land at the Visakhapatnam airport with the State Government taking firm initiative to get permission from the Union Government to formally declare it an International Airport.
The Department of Investment and Infrastructure now with Chief Minister Konijeti Roshaiah has written to Ministry of Civil Aviation to accord the requisite permission for the airport and a favourable reply was likely in July. The State Government was regularly reviewing the status of the demand in order to help bring foreign investment to north Andhra region.
Only hurdle
Only hurdle as of now is with timings as Indian Navy permits operations only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., which does not attract many airlines to schedule their operations only during day time. From the data available with the Air Travellers’ Association of India, about 6 lakh people annually go either to Hyderabad, Chennai or Mumbai to take flights to South East and West Asia from coastal region extending from Berhampur to Bhimavaram.
Emirates Airlines, Air Arabia, and Silk Airways were showing interest in beginning their operations from Vizag in view of great potential and Spice Jet now taken over by Kalanidhi Maran would also qualify this year to operate international flights as it would complete 5 years of domestic operations.
The Vizag airport has Night Landing Facility and the Instrument Landing Facility with 10,030 feet runway enough to accommodate landing of Boeing 747s and Airbus 340. This is also one of the 18 airports in the country recognised for operating unlimited number of flights under Open Sky Policy and as part of ASEAN Agreement this has been projected as one the potential ones.
It is already a Customs airport and Ministry of External Affair along with local police has to set up an immigration checking post also. Passenger intake should be 700 per hour to have the status.
Keywords: foreign investment, Visakhapatnam airport
Bhubaneswar airport should immediately be declared as an International Airport, keeping in view the massive development that is taking place inthe city. Living the Gulf, it would be boon to all oriya NRIs since we have to waste a lot of time transiting at Delhi or Mumbai airports. If this airport is declared International, flights like Air Arabic, Gulf Air, Saudia Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Arways from teh gulf sector and Air Asia, Thai Air,Malaysian Airlines from the Far East sector would definitely show interest.Even Lufthansa and Air France and Japan Airlines may show great interest as it would be very convenient for them to ferry international tourists to Eastern India and then on to the Far East.

In my opinion, our state govt. must give top most priority in their 3rd continuous innings at least on logistics activities such as
1.Converting Bhubaneswar airport to an international airport and to start Jharusuguda airport to be in Operational mode.
2.NH-5 golden Quadrilateral (pending 4 lane work BBSR to Brahmapur) work completion.
3.Expediting the Coastal highway project (Gopalpur to Digha) – http://www.orissalinks.com/orissagrowth/archives/1245
4.Expediting Vijayawada – Ranchi National Highway work

If not now, then it will never be getting international status -The BBSR Airport.
Refer the article about the Vizag. International airport which is expected to be declared next month…
