Contract awarded for six laning of Bhubaneswar-Chandikhol: includes flyovers at CRP, Acharya Vihar, Vani Vihar and Rasulgarh squares in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, Bhubaneswar- Cuttack- Puri, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack- Kalinganagar, Cuttack, Cuttack, Expressways, Jajpur, Khordha, NH 5 (488 kms: NH No.6 in Jharkhand - Baripada - Baleshwar - Bhadrakh - Cuttack - Bhubaneswar - Khordha - Brahmapur - upto Andhra Pradesh Border) May 30th. 2010, 4:19pmFollowing is from a report in Pioneer:
The six-laning work of the Bhubaneswar–Chandikhol portion of the National Highway-5 will begin from September, after this rainy season. A sum of Rs 1,047 crore will be invested for the project under the NHDP Phase-5. A consortium has been formed with three private companies, and the contract awarded, an official of NHAI said.
The consortium of Srei, Gulfar and Simplex Infrastructure would undertake the project, which is scheduled to be completed in two and a half years’ period. This would be done on the BOT basis. After completion of the work, the consortium would maintain the road and collect toll for a period of 26 years.
After the four-laning work of the NH-5, this is the first stretch within Odisha to have six lanes. The distance from Bhubaneswar to Chandikhol is 67 km, which would have seven flyovers and four major bridges over the river Kathjodi, Kuakhai, Mahanadi and Birupa. Out of the seven flyovers, four would be built over the CRP, Acharya Vihar, Vani Vihar and Rasulgarh squares along the highway in Bhubaneswar.

I dont think there is any major requirement of constructing flyovers within Bhubaneswar city. Instead fastracking the coinstruction of a bypass of the Bhubaneswar Cuttack region would be a much better option. SIx laning should be done though, as already roads are getting clogged, and from a long term point of view two extra lanes should be constructed. But flyovers will give a very bad look to the city, not to mention take up a lot of space in the center of the city.
Also the flyovers at Jaydev Vihar Sqaure are of a very bad design. The design only takes care to divert the highway traffic over the city roads, while not caring about the ease of movement of the city traffic. If any flyovers are to be constructed, they shoould ensure the smooth flow of city traffic. Heavy highway traffic shold be moved on to a bypass and not kept within the city limits at all, as far as possible.

I heartly welcome any kind of infrastructural developement with in Odisha. My state have lack of such flyovers, multilaned roads than other states in India. It will definitely take Bhubaneswar to a new height which will definite attract new companies other than steel companies to Odisha. In this context I would like to request the State Govt to follow up the Rourkela-Sambalpur Expressway project as Odisha do not have a single expressway. The work for Rourkela-Sambalpur expressway should be stared as soon as possible.
Thanks,

I just want to know when the Rourkela-Sambalpur Expressway work will begin.I am desperately waiting for the work to be started as soon as possible.Rourkela is my home town.Odisha do not have a single expressway. So this will be the first expressway in the entire state. There is much more requirement of such expressways through out the state. So state road department should plan for those requirements, like 4 laning of Manguli-Sambalpur road,Rourkela-Banarpal road.
