Initial plans for a Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Khurda metro rail
Bhubaneswar- Cuttack- Puri, Khordha, TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION July 28th. 2010, 12:56pmFollowing is an excerpt from a report in Telegraph.
To reduce road traffic congestion, the state transport department has initiated steps to connect the twin city of Bhubaneswa and Cuttack by metro rail. The service would cover almost 150 km between the two cities touching 20 vital points.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been asked to conduct a survey. Later the state government would undertake the construction work with technical assistance from DMRC. “The work is expected to be over by 2030. The construction work would start from 2020,” said transport secretary Satyabrata Sahu.
The service would be extended upto the expanded areas of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Cuttack Development Authority (CDA). “It means, people can travel from Jatni to Choudwar, about 55 km”, he said.
Considering the cost component, the state government has planned to lay separate over-road tracks for metro rails instead of underground ones.
Trains will sneak through major junctions, covering almost 150 km. Soon after the survey, the state government would make budgetary provisions for laying of tracks.
… “It is expected that the population of the twin cities will cross 50 lakh by the end of 2030. Immediate steps need to be taken to shift traffic congestion. As a solution to the traffic congestion, we have planned to introduce metro rail”, said transport minister Sanjiv Sahu.
The graphics accompanying this article has a dead link. It has the list of the 20 key places the metro rail will touch. By enlarging I could read the following names: Jatni, Khurda, P—, Khandagiri, Kalinga studio square, CRP square, Power house square, Jayadev Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Vani Vihar, Rasulgarh, Naharkanta, Pahala, Phulnakhara, Link Road, Badam Badi, Mangalabag, OMP, Manguli Square, and Chowduar.
The target date to start construction is 2020 and operation is 2030. That is too far in the future. Kochi, which is a similar sized metro area as Bhubaneswar-Cuttack is far ahead in the process. See http://kochimetrorail.blogspot.com/. (As per the World-Gazetteer greater Bhubaneswar has a population of 1.696 million while greater Kochi has a population of 1.564 million.)

2030 is too late. We’ll see the bad traffic in bhubaneswar may be in next 3-5 yrs. So, it should be planned to complete maximum by 2020.

Projects such as these should start small and then scale up over time. In fact there is no reason why small stretches of rail, even 4 to 5 kms, can’t be built over the next 3-5 years. If one has a look at some of the cities in the following website http://www.urbanrail.net (check out the smaller cities such as Sevilla (Spain) Palma de Mallorca (Spain), one will quickly realize that while population is one factor, albeit an important one, that drives the construction of a metro it isn’t the only one. Granted cities in Europe and those in India can’t be compared as yet but then population need not really be a limiting factor, imagination and collective initiative are.

It is a good idea. One year back i had requested and suggested for metrorail connectivity in BBSR in this orissalink site.So really i am excited after goingthrough this article. But the time period should be reduced.

Development delayed is development denied! I hope the govt. considers it.

The metrorail project should be started immediately without waiting for 2020 to come.It can be easily expected in few years BBSR-CTC population is going to be increased and must cross millions. To manage the demand of such big population its not only metro project will be enough.Adequte bus services facility must available like bangalore. This things must be planned by transport officials from now. That will be a sign of orissa development.Atleast for now we should try with the maximum development of BBSR-CTC city areas.once these process will be accelarated then automatically other place like rourkela, berhampur etc… will touch similar facilities 🙂

The concept of having a metrorail project becoming functional by 2030 is very late process, Now itself the twin cities cover up a population of nearly 15 lakhs, and these both cities need a metro connectivity badly now, as the rush in commutation is increasing day by day between both cities.Instead of going with the idea of having 150kms long metro by 2030, the starting phase should be implemented within next 3 yrs between badambadi(CUTTACK)& Baramunda(BBSR) as rush in travelling between these two important areas is going to increase unexpectedly by next 5 years

This exhibits the utter reactive nature of our government. Its strange to learn that our govt is planning for metro almost after 20 years from now when we already have many problems with traffic congestion & unavailability of alternate mode of transport in the cities of Bhubaneswar & Cuttack.
Now its easier to develop the infrastructure as the highway is comparatively free.

The peculiarity of Hong Kong metro is that its the only Metro Rail in the world which makes a profit by properly tapping Real estate potential of the area around it. While planning for Bhubaneswar Metro the planners should keep that in mind or else it will come to grief like Kolkata Metro whose fare box collection is just sufficient to pay its Electricity Bills

It’s a good step.
But,it should be earlier.Bcoz, even today ,we’ll see the traffic condition,it can be concluded that the traffic problem will reach the ultimate limit within 2 to 3 years..
SO,IT’S A REQUEST FROM ALL TWINCITIANS THAT GOVT. SHOULD LOOK AFTER THIS PROJECT TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.MOST PROBABLY,THE CONSTRUCTION SHOULD START FROOM 2015..

GOOD PROJECT…But started immediately without waiting for 2020…
