We don’t know whether there is Rahul Gandhi’s hand in the recent setbacks to Vedanta or Posco, but it is definitely clear that opposition politicians generally instigate villagers to oppose projects such as these by buying off key leaders or offering inducements to the population living in these places. I have been to my ancestral village and seen how people can be bought off before an election just by being given a ‘khasi mangsa’ (mutton meal) and some country liquor. Imagine deciding the fate of your leader just because he can offer you a meal. The Congress just happens to be in the opposition. I can’t say the BJD would behave very differently if it were in the opposition.
When I was at Bhubaneswar I have heard people say that the Posco and Vedanta projects will somehow not see the light of the day as long as the BJD is ruling the state. We need development not politics.

If this is true, then Rahul Gandhi is playing very dirty and cheap politics. Playing with the minds of underdeveloped tribals is not expected from an educated youth leader. Unfortunately state congress is also not opposing it. Hope Vedanta and Posco projects see the light of the day.

Congress is infamous for its cheap politics since years. During the congress rule in Odisha, we have not seen any real development. When something is happening then this new cheap Gandhi is putting hurdles. I am sure congress will take some more time to revive in Odisha as there is no such good leader in the state. Rahul will not get success if he is taking this cheap route.

Congress is presenting him as a leader of the future, but if this news is to be believed, he doesn’t even remotely seem to be a maan with a vision. If he chooses to remain silent on an issue which will have great bearing for Orissa that will only show his level of indifference towards Orissa. By the way, even the PM in his six year stint has visited Orissa only once and he is yet to keep his promise of visiting the KBK districts.

Rahul Gandhi’s views on Odisha seem to be influenced primarily by leftist NGO-type group. His main people are Mani shankar Aiyar, Jairam ramesh etc. people who have strong leftist leanings. This is hurting his views. The people of the state are very much pro-development and blocking these projects are the wrong way for electoral politics in Odisha.
