Brittania wants 10-12 acres for a 45 crores new factory
Bhubaneswar- Cuttack- Puri, Cuttack, Food processing, Khordha September 5th. 2010, 4:24pmFollowing is an excerpt from a report in sify.com.
Britannia Industries Ltd, India’s leading biscuit company, expects to start work on its second unit in Orissa soon.
"We have applied to the Orissa government for 10-12 acres of land near the twin city of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and expect to get a final nod on it within weeks", said Vinita Bali, Managing Director, Britannia Industries.
Bali, …, said the proposed unit will produce different varieties of biscuits mainly for the Orissa market.
The unit, to be built at cost of Rs 40 to 45 crore, will have an installed capacity to produce about 2,500 tonnes of biscuit per month.
It being a labour intensive industry, the unit will employ about 500 to 700 persons. This will be the second unit of the company in Orissa. It presently has a 1,000 tonnes per month capacity biscuit unit in Mayurbhanj, boardering West Bengal.
… The company, at present, has manufacturing facilities in Uttaranchal, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.
Should the Odisha government give them 10-12 acres of land in Bhubaneswar-Cuttack for an investment of only 45 acres and employment of 700 people, most of which will be perhaps unskilled workers? Also, why do they need to establish it in Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. Why not in a rural area where 700 unskilled jobs will be appreciated more and where land is less of a concern.

This is a perfect decision. Sounds more like a real-estate scam here. This is an issue for the opposition to pick up.

Frankly I think some of these companies such as Britannia can establish their manufacturing facilities in other cities rather than Bhubaneswar though they can have their corporate office in the city. Why not establish the facility in Sambalpur, Berhampur etc. These places are well connected, have available land and I am sure they can find the right manpower too. But knowing our babus and ministers I wouldn’t be surprised if they are allotted the land in quid pro quo arrangement.

Prof. Baral,
If you will think from a entrepreneur’s view you will feel that every industry needs a industrial environment. That is the concept why all the state govts. have developed industrial estates. I think 80 percent of the SMEs operate from industrial estates only.
I know Athagarh area had developed an industrial estate with ready made sheds during the tenure of Mr. J B Pattanayak. But just go there and see the condition of the ruined sheds. I am not sure if any such initiative would have been taken in other areas or not. That may be due to its remoteness from the urban facilities. So also Paradeep IDCO area (Developed under the initiative of Graet Biju Babu and his close aide Narayana Birabara Samanta, former king of Gada Kujanga and ex-MLA, Erasama.)
My point is for industry you need a industrial urban environment. Britannia is already operating at Mayurbhanj, and there must be a reservation why they are not expanding the existing unit rather than setting a fresh one. I would sincerely request them to have the unit at Keonjhar rather than any other place if any expansion is not possible at Mayurbhanj.
But if the state govt. would be trying to utilize the land of any sick or closed industrial unit in Mancheswar, Khapuria or Jagatpur industrial estates it would be a good effort as well. I can still suggest the industrial estate of Paradeep which has a lot of unused industrial plots that could be best utilised like this. I am pretty sure other industrial estates must be like this only.
Finally if the state govt. can allot a existing industrial unit then it would be the best effort to revive that estate.

I dont think one should question the company just becasue they are seeking land near Bhubaneswar / Cuttack. Tata Power is trying to set up a thermal plan so close to the twin cities. Its like allowing a elephant to pass by and restricting an ant. There are many rural areas near Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and the land required is not much. It is non-polluting too. And if you compare the employment opportunities of mega ventures like Posco or Vedanta with Britannia in terms of investment and land required, one can easily see that there are more jobs on offer.
