Nestle and other food processing units show interest in Odisha
Bhubaneswar- Cuttack- Puri, Food processing, Khordha September 13th. 2010, 2:43pmFollowing is from a report in Business Standard.
The food processing sector is gradually gaining momentum in the state. After a string of investment proposals from biggies in the sector like Britannia, ITC, Parle Agro Indo Nissin and Future Foods, another behemoth in the packaged food industry-Nestle has evinced interest in setting up a state-of-the-art food processing unit in the state at an investment of around Rs 500 crore.
The food processing facility of Nestle would be spread over 50 acres and the Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Orissa Ltd (Idco) has already identified land for the purpose between Bhubaneswar and Khurda, an official source told Business Standard.
Nestle India’s Orissa facility will manufacture the entire gamut of the company’s products including milk products, beverages, chocolates and confectionery.
… Among the other big players in the food processing sector- Parle Agro’s unit has been cleared by the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority while the site selection is underway for the proposed project of Indo Nissin Foods, the noodles maker.
ITC has so far remained non-responsive after initially evincing interest to invest in the food processing sector.

More and more such industries should be facilitated into the state. But why so much interest for being close to Bhubaneswar? Ideally, Nestle should have been offered a site in Kandhamal, Boudh or Sonepur District.

it is because when a good project is asking for a land, then suddenly govt is ready to give them a freeland near bbsr area,it is the bjd govt why total odissa is daridra as before 2002,this govt is only for the devlopment of capital with the name of odissa, they know how to cheat the other people

Orissa is completely bereft of entreprenurial culture and that is why even such meager investments enthuse us so much. But, when mineral based industries are making no headway, investments in food processing sector need to be welcomed as they will absorb the labour force.

It seems companies want to grab some prime land in name of industry and later selling it for realty when the market will pickup. The same is happening in Mumbai with all the cotton mills.

I completely agree with Abhishek that we must welcome food processing units. I think Orissa will do well to have smaller non polluting industries which are more labour intensive so that more employment is generated. Welcome Nestle…welcome Britania. Unfortunately some want to find fault in such projects and brand such investments as land grabbing just because they want land near Bhubaneswar/Cuttack.

@Prasanna: I am not from Bhubaneswar. However, if I were an executive with Nestle I wouldn’t want to set up my operation in the districts you mentioned for a number of reasons (lack of proper rail/road connectivity or both, lack of conducive social atmosphere, etc.). Having said that I see no reason why many of these industries can’t be set up around Cuttack/Berhampur/Balasore/Sambalpur/Rourkela. All of these cities are reasonably place in terms of connectivity and other social indicators.
@Debi P Sarangi: It is quite possible that many of these industries are out to grab land with the connivance of politicians/and babus in various ministries. The government definitely needs to be a lot more transparent when it comes to doling out land for private universities/companies.
@Ranjit Patnaik: I completely agree with you. The state needs to concentrate much more on encouraging industries that are less tied to mining/minerals. There are 59 MoUs that have been signed with steel companies of various sizes. Is this a realistic figure by any stretch of imagination (The figure should be closer to 5!)? If you read the papers all that is mentioned is that many of these industries are in ‘various stages of production’. Public memory is short but let us not forget the stories such as that of Mesco.

It is fine to say that these industries should go to under developed dists, but do we have a policy that incentivises these industries to go to these Dists? At the national level industries setting shops in states in the North East, Himachal and Uttarkhand etc get tax concessions, but I guess in Orissa we provide no incentives to an industry if it decides to operate from Malkangiri instead of Bhubaneswar.
