Progress on Subarnarekha port (earlier referred to as port at Kirtania)
Balasore, Choumukha-Kirtania, Balasore (Creative ports, Chennai interested) September 20th. 2010, 11:52amFollowing are reports from Samaja and Dharitri. It says land has been selected in the Choumukh panchayat. The port, which was earlier referred to as Kirtania port, is now referred to as Subarnarekha port. The Samaja article mentions that for the port connectivity there will be a two lane road and rail lines between Haldipada and Choumukh. The Daharitri article mentions the rail points as Rupsa and Jaleswar. Both articles say that if things go as planned the port should be operational by 2014. I am not sure whether any of these ports will get the necessary clearance from the Ministry of Defence (DRDO). I read a report recently that said the MoD is reluctant to allow any ports north of Dhamra. Unfortunately if this this is true then it is going to be detrimental to the development of northern Orissa.
One of the prime advantages Orissa has is its coastline. Now if more than a third of this coastline is not allowed to be developed just because of a missile testing center then it’s does not bode well for the state.

You are probably referring to the article at

This one is safe. The ones in trouble are the proposals between Dhamara and Kirtania.
That means: Inchudi, Chandipur, Bahabalpur and Chudamani. (See map at http://www.orissalinks.com/orissagrowth/wp-content/uploads/image/orissa%20ports%20%28Small%29.jpg )
I think they will get approval for Chudamani. The Birla group wants it. There is some interest in Inchudi, but there has not been much interest for the other two.

The development is fine. But do we need these ports from the feasibility point of view. Are we targeting for export of minerals only? In future these things are definitely going to be stopped and Odisha will definitely develop the SMEs for the usage of the metals produced in the state.
Second, container facility is still a distant dream for Odisha ports. If JNPT, Mumbai and Haldia port are doing it well then why not Paradeep? Dhamra has the planning for this. The dedicated east freight corridor should be extended to the ports of Odisha as well. This will naturally increase the traffic of containers.
