Can any one update about the completion of golden quadrilateral highway project between the route Berhampur and Bhubaneswar!!!
NH-217 (Gopalpur- Raipur) is again ignored in this list….NH-217 is the life line of Ganjam district and the most accident prone zone is between Aska – Gopalpur. At least Central / State government should make it a 4 lane highway to ease the traffic flow and repetitive accidents.

104 killed on NH in Berhampur in 10 years

SANTANU BARAD | BERHAMPUR
It’s shocking but true. As many as 104 persons have been killed on National Highway inside the Berhampur city limits during the last 10 years. And 269 others have been injured in accidents, since the road inside the city was declared as National Highway-217 in 2001.
These facts have come to the fore after a young lawyer sought information from the Police Department through Right to Information (RTI) Act. Manoj Patnaik in April 2010 asked for specific information about the numbers of deaths and injured persons in accidents on National Highway-217.
Notably, the Government of India has declared the road from Gopalpur Port to Raipur (MP) as National Highway-217. The highway runs through the city starting from the Ambapua railway level crossing to Budhi Thakurani Square. The NH inside the city is around 15-km long, with as many as five police stations located on this stretch.
Responding to Patnaik’s RTI application, the city police stated that 104 persons have died in accidents during the last 10 years starting from April 2001 to April 2010 besides 269 being injured in mishaps on this NH inside the city.
Patnaik, after obtaining the shocking figures of deaths and injured persons, have filed a petition under Section 133 of IPC seeking division of the highway in order to prevent accidents in the city owing to heavy traffic.
The petition has contended that the highway along the city should have dividers with iron or break wall to save lives by preventing accidents. The Regional Officer of Transport Department (Government of India), Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer and Executive Engineer of the National Highway-217 have been made parties in the petition.

As Mr Ajay Sahu has rightly pointed out NH-217 connecting Gopalpur port with Raipur which passes through Ganjam,Kanhamal,Kalahandi and Nuapada Districts is being repeatedly neglected. The state Govt has raised the demand for NH-217 bypass project for Berhampur in the past but all of a sudden there is no buzz around it. This bypass is vital for the development of Greater Berhampur region. Four laning of NH- 217 will compensate for those districts which are not a part of the Vijaywada- Ranchi highway.
