Indigo brings new connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Coimbatore/Vizag
BBSR-Bangalore, BBSR-Chennai, BBSR-Delhi, BBSR-Hyderabad, BBSR-Kolkata, BBSR-Mumbai, BBSR-Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Bhubaneswar- Cuttack- Puri, Khordha February 12th. 2012, 2:16amAs S. Pani points out Indigo is going to have the following new flights through Bhubaneswar:
Starting 16th Feb:
6E 293 Kolkata-Bhubaneswar-Mumbai-Coimbatore
6E 294 Coimbatore-Mumbai-Bhubaneswar-Kolkata
Starting 7th March
6E 511 Chennai-Vizag-Bhubaneswar-Kolkata
6E 512 Kolkata-Bhubaneswar-Vizag-Chennai
With these and other recent changes following is a glimpse of the flight connectivity between Bhubaneswar and other cities. We only show direct flights or flights with one stop (but no plane changes).
Kolkata:
Delhi: (Note – The Jetlite flight does not show up in the left.)Mumbai: (The Jetlite and Jet Konect flights below refer to the same flight.)
Bangalore: (The Jetlite and Jet Konect flights below refer to the same flight.)
Hyderabad: (For some reason the above Jet Konnect/Jet Lite flight to Hyderabad does not show up below.)Chennai: (The Air India flight below is five days a week.)Visakhapatnam: Port Blair: Coimbatore:
The new flights that Indigo introduced has the hopping schedule that South West airlines in USA has. Such a hopping schedule allows for additional 1 or 2 stop connections without plane changes. I hope in the future similar connectivity is added to places like Cochin, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Indore, Guwahati, Lucknow/Kanpur etc.
I also noticed that on some days the price to fly between Bhubaneswar and Mumbai is more than flying from Bhubaneswar to Coimbatore via Mumbai on the same flight.

International flights from Vizag in March 26th 2012 !

With this, South Odisha region people have a choice to use either Vizag. or Bhubaneswar International Airport (?) in future.
Now we can raise our concern/demand (as Vizag. Airport claims Brahmapur is their Passenger Zone) to initiate a remote terminal (with Bus service) at Brahmapur so that passengers can check-in and take a bus to reach the Vizag. International Airport.
As a similar gesture to Andhra Pradesh and more Passenger friendly, all DMU trains are starting from Palasa to BBSR /CTC/Paradeep instead of Brahmapur.

Good for the people of Vizag and surroundings. Though I imagine that most of the people getting on at Vizag will be domestic travellers to Hyderabad.
Also come to think of it, Vizag needs international flights more than Bhubaneswar does. Let me explain.
The two major international hubs in India are Bombay and Delhi, both having more than 6000 international aircraft movements per month. No other airport in the country touches even half that number.
Now lets compare Bhubaneswar and Vizag’s air connectivity to these two airports. Vizag has two scheduled direct flight to Delhi and it has three direct flights to Bombay per day. Bhubaneswar on the other hand has 7 direct flights to Delhi and 3 to Bombay per day.
Thus I feel it is far easier for international travellers to fly in and out of Bhubaneswar than Vizag.
Also, as far as my quite good sources go, the official clearance required from the Finance Ministry GoI to declare Bhubaneswar an international airport has been done for quite a few years now. Just that Bhubaneswar doesnt have any scheduled international flights yet. And in my view does not desperately need any considering how well Bhubaneswar airport is connected to all the major international hubs of India. At best Bhubaneswar could get hopping flights to Dubai and Singapore to allow international passengers higher flexibility in international travel by connecting to far larger international hubs.
As for Berhampur’s air travellers, I would imagine they would prefer to come to Bhubaneswar rather than travel to Vizag. Three reasons:
1. Bhubaneswar airport is about a 100kms closer to Berhampur than Vizag airport. That means a good 90-120mins less time taken.
2. Bhubaneswar is very very well connected to almost the entire country, while Vizag is almost exclusively connected Chennai and Hyderabad.
3. I imagine average ticket prices as well as availability of seats would be far better from Bhubaneswar, as almost all flights from Vizag are operated on smaller, 70 or less seating, aircrafts like ATRs, Dash8s or CRJs.

I wrote in facebook:
Note that the new Vizag terminal has been operational since 2009 and since then they have been vigorously pushing for international flights. (If one googles “Vizag International flight” one will come across news about various times in the past 2-3 years when international flights were supposed to start here.)
The new Bhubaneswar terminal is expected to be operational this summer and the plan is that the current terminal will then become the international terminal.
