To be really honest, when people were displaced on account of the 6 mtpa steel project of Tata Steel they did not have any idea of what waited in the future.
But today as part of Tata Steel Parivar, all are confident that what happened, happened for the better. The Tatas, have been unfairly condemned for their industrial project but in reality they have proved to be true friends. First and foremost, they provided a better quality of life to people. Better homes, opportunities for education, modern health facilities and modern township – nobody could believe that such happiness was in store. Many who got displaced, have also started a new and happy life, with a steady source of income to meet their family needs. The scholarship scheme helps children to fulfil their dreams to study more and more. The new generation does not want to be considered backward any more.
But unfortunately, no good things come smoothly. Unnecessarily, the supporters of Bistapani Birodhi Mancha with the help of external activists and so-called leaders are creating terror in Kalinganagar locality in which the women members of the community are badly affected. The industrialisation process has helped the women from our community to come out of the kitchen to meet roles of responsibility. For the last few years some handful of supporters under the garb of BBJM are not allowing development to happen and creating deliberate hurdles against industrialization. They have even beaten up and molested the people who opposed their interests.
So, when we have just started enjoying a better lifestyle with hopes of an even better future, it is very unfair to prevent our newly achieved success and happiness, just in the name of anti-industrialization. At least, the corporates have thought us capable to be at par with the advanced society. So who do you think is our sympathizer and friend? The corporate or the trouble-makers.

“Creation of Wealth” is an inspiring book that tells about Tata Steel’s great CSR vision, first adopted by the founders. The original dream has been fulfilled in manifold directions and it is still the prime force behind the philosophy of sustainabilty that drives the Company. We salute the Organisation’s sincere efforts to bring positive changes to the society…! Kudos to all the people who take forward the huge responsibility … As someone said, true development happens only when the society benefits! Please check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr_i2MFs3wQ. This is really overwhelming.

For long, Tata Steel’s project at Kalinganagar area has been criticized unnecessarily by groups who have only their own interests in mind. But the fact is that the project has proved to be a boon for the displaced families of Kalinganagar. The fortunes of the displaced families have taken a rather different direction as they are economically much well off than what they used to be. Their annual income has almost doubled over the years according to a recent survey (according to exact statistics the growth is 96%). Tata Steel Parivar Rehabilitation Scheme has given special importance to the quality of life of these displaced families. The Self Help Groups have proved to be beneficial for these families. The initiative to organize village women and form SHGs has also enabled them to find alternative livelihood opportunities. The Kalinganagar Project of Tata Steel is indeed an epitome of responsible industrialization.

The fact that Tata Steel in Odisha has won the CSR Leadership Award is an answer to those people and group which have been instrumental in maligning the Company’s reputation. It has taken innumerable initiatives in the fields of healthcare, education, women empowerment, sports and cultural enrichment of the people. Tata Steel at Kalinganagar played a pioneering role in discovering the mineral wealth for the people of Odisha and is serving 20,000 people in 500 villages of the State. The hospitals at Joda, Sukinda, Belpahar are efficient enough to reach out to the interior villages. It has also built more than 200 schools in Odisha over last 15 years. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Tata Steel’s amity with the State of Odisha has brought about major socioeconomic development in the lives of the people and the villagers. I wonder why industrialisation is becoming such a problem in the Kalinganagar and Sukinda plateau region. The power hungry extremist groups (naxals) are helping anti-social groups like BBJM to resist industrialisation in every possible way. And even after all this, these extremist groups claim that their only concern is regarding the Kalinganagr tribals. Perhaps this so-called concern made BBJM carry out the alleged blast in the Kalinganagr area. Needless to say, the blast was horrific. These anti industrialisation groups also take ransom as high as Rs 100 crores per annum from local industries to carry out savage activities on the tribals. Do I really need to say why incidents like this are happening? It is clear that BBJM has lost the supoort of the Kalinganagar tribals since they are now very much in favour of industrialisation. Thus they have now chosen to use force and brutality on the tribals to stay in power. The tribal villagers have demanded actions against BBJM and this is a clear indication that industrialisation is for the betterment of the Kalinganagar villagers. I really hope that immediate steps are taken against these anti industrialisation groups so that the Kalinganagr area can look forward to a better future. The fact that industrialisation has done immense good to Kalinganagar cannot be negated at all. I have noticed that several groups and people have been maligning Tata Steel for the fact that it has brought about industrialisation in Kalinganagar. But the reality is that the Company has continuously engaged itself in bringing about positive changes in the area. Recently Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) Bamnipal organised a two-day Mega Health Camp in order to reach out to those requiring medical services. The Company also tried to create awareness regarding HIV/AIDS. This is just one of the innumerable initiatives that Tata Steel has taken. After all this is it really justified to say that industrialisation is detrimental for Kalinganagar? To know more visit http://kalinganagar.tatasteel.com/events/Mega-Health-Camp-Tomka.asp.

Tata Steel’s efforts for improving the condition of Kalinganagar has caught the attention of several eminent personalities. Former Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Padmashree Awardee Professor (Dr.) P.K. Jena is definitely one of them. Those who hold a bias against Tata Steel for bringing about industrialisation in Kalinganagar area must take heed of what Professor P.K. Jena felt after he visited the Tata rehabilitation colonies of Sansailo, Gobarghati and Trijanga in Kalinganagar. He got to know about the betterment that Tata Steel has brought is the lives of the relocated families and the SHG members through several income generating activities. The improved quality of life at the rehabilitation colonies also impressed him. Professor P.K. Jena’s opinion on Tata Steel is indeed a good reply to all those who have been instrumental in maligning Tata Steel’s reputation. “Tata Steel has truly been a Corporate House with a responsible social conscience. Therefore when it comes to taking care of people displaced as a result of its upcoming projects, the Company does not only guarantee their immediate comfort, but also ensures their economic empowerment. The SHGs that have been foemed in the Kalinganagar area to support project affected families are given all the necessary help and training to make their endeavour a success. The Odisha Project Team of Tata Steel organised a three-day training programme on the management and running of SHGs. it provided the participants all the detailed information that would help them in furthering their SHG projects. The discussion also included training on SHG financing. For details about this programme please go through the link provided –

Tata Steel is indeed one of those few industrial houses that takes special care of the overall development of a community. I am sure I won’t be exaggerating if I say that the initiatives that it has taken in Kalinganagar has brought about immense progress in the area. With the aim of reaching out to a larger number of people requiring medical services, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) Bamnipal organised a two-day Mega Health Camp on 7th and 8th October 2010 in collaboration with the Office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Jajpur. The OPD and Mobile Health Unit of TSRDS provide regular medical services to more than 25 villages in the area. Not only this, Tata Steel has also taken various steps to create awareness on HIV and AIDS. This is just a tiny part of Tata Steel’s initiatives in this area. And in spite of all this people and groups keep defaming Tata Steel. I firmly believe that our Country would have a much brighter future if other industrial houses also work with the same zeal as that of Tata Steel. Tata Steel’s efforts in Kalinganagar have received due appreciation from all quarters and may very well be seen as a benchmark in Rehabilitation and Resettlement initiatives. Of special mention is the women empowerment programmes, aptly called ‘Tejaswini’ do denote the force and capability that women possess. To meet the people of the Rehabilitation colonies, a team of lady journalists from both print and electronic media visited Kalinganagar. Miscreants and vested interests of Kalinganagar disown mainstream political parties and are torturing poor local tribals at Kalinganagar. Because they are losing the support from the local tribals and local tribals are now much more interested on development of their lifestyle. They want better health care facilities, educations for their children. Hence they are supporting industrialization, which is not desirable by the BBJM. So they are torturing, threatening the local tribals not to accept the rehabilitation package. To know more visit http://www.kalinganagar.com/pdf/Sukinda-&-Danagadi-Tribal-Protection-Society.pdf.

When people relocate to a different area, it is crucial that there economic stability is ensured. Tata Steel has treated all the displaced people at Kalinganagar like members of its family and taken every necessary step to provide them economic empowerment and all other facilities required to lead a decent life. Therefore, training programmes are regularly organized at the Gandhi Labour Foundation, Puri to train and enlighten PRI members on the development initiatives undertaken. So, we may well imagine the degree of involvement the Company has for the welfare of the community. For an interesting video on such a training programme, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpWsK15zg1o

Tata Steel is one of those industrial houses that knows the true meaning of responsible industrialisation. I firmly believe that the ethics which govern Tata Steel are all about community welfare. There have been attempts by various groups and people to malign Tata Steel for its ongoing project in Kalinganagar area. Sadly none of their efforts have been fruitful as Tata Steel has time and again proved its strong ethical standards through its innumerable initiatives. Recently in the 21st Industrial Trade Fair on 5th December 2010, Tata Steel highlighted on the initiatives that it has taken for women empowerment, promotion of SHGs and attainment of millennium development goals (MDGs). Being commoners, our duty is to know about these initiatives of Tata Steel. To know more about this, visit http://kalinganagar.tatasteel.com/events/jajpur-industrial-trade-fair-gets-underway.asp.

In spite of repeated resistance from various groups and people, Tata Steel has never stopped itself from continuing the good work for the welfare of the displaced families of Kalinganagar. Tata Steel is one of those industrial houses that believes in building a relationship with the lesser fortunate people of the society. This is evident from the fact that recently the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) team of Tata Steel’s Odisha Project, organised two rural workshops on Government schemes and programmes on 21st and 22nd December 2010. The main aim of this workshop was to intimate the villagers regarding the various schemes for the development of their colonies. Not only this, the workshop served a bigger purpose as well. It played the role of a platform for interaction between the community and the officials. It is strange that even after all this, some people do not cease from defaming Tata Steel. Isn’t it obvious that an industrial house that takes initiatives such as these, truly believes in responsible industrialisation? Tata Steel is not one of those industrial houses that exists in isolation or confines itself within the boundaries of mere business. This is evident from the various initiatives that it has taken for the people of Odisha and Kalinganagar. One of the most significant has definitely been the Lifeline Express. The hospital is well equipped with all the necessary facilities. In fact it has provided free medical checkups, treatments and medical appliances to various people. It also cured the leg deformity of Lipi Das. Healthcare facilities are one of the most important aspects of everybody’s lives, and in this regard Tata Steel has definitely taken some crucial steps. After all this, can we really blame and defame an industrial house like Tata Steel? It is our responsibility to know the truth rather than getting carried away by rumours that aim at maligning Tata Steel. I think the answer to this question is quite obvious. Responsible industrialisation has never been malicious. In fact it leads to the prosperity of a community and this is exactly the Tata Steel has been doing. Many have blamed Tata Steel for its 6 million tonne per annum integrated steel plant project in Kalinganagar industrial complex. Of course it is easier to criticize than to appreciate. I would like to ask one question to those who keep on maligning Tata Steel- have they ever bothered to have a more comprehensive understanding of this project and the positive changes that it has brought about in the lives of the displaced families? I am sure if this would have been done, then it would have been clear that Tata Steel’s sole aim is our country’s prosperity. At the same time it has taken every possible initiative through its Rehabilitation & Resettlement (R&R) programme to improve the lives of the displaced families and the Kalinganagar tribals. All the displaced families have been dealt with extreme care, empathy and passion. Not only this they have also been provided with earning opportunities, education and proper healthcare facilities. The earning capacities of these families has increased at a remarkable rate of 96% over the past few years. The Company has also made sure that the children receive proper education. It also gives emphasis on independent social audit and this has played a key role in improving the lives of the villagers. The fate of many families have also changed because of this project. Turi Ghagrai’s family is one of them. She lost her husband but because of Tata Steel’s R&R packages she and her son have seen a better life. This was just one of the innumerable families whose lives have changed with this project. Many eminent personalities keep visiting the Kalinganagar industrial complex and congratulate Tata Steel for these initiatives. Hence I believe that before judging anyone or any company, we need to get our facts correct. And those who want to know more about this can visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkRY_dN4qGE.
