  • Utkal University – Computer Science (30)

KIIT has approval for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats.

Earlier we had mentioned a running headline regarding KIMS (the medical college of KIIT university) getting MCI approval for starting MBBS. But until now there was no proper news report on it. Today Kalinga Times reports that indeed KIIT has received approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs (on recommendations by the MCI and the Dental Council) for 100 Medical (MBBS) and 100 Dentistry (BDS) seats. KIMS now has a new web page.

Ranking of Orissa Engineering Colleges based on student preferences

(Update on June 17 2008:  For guidance on what you can get with your Orissa JEE rank in 2008, please see https://www.orissalinks.com/archives/1185 I do not have more information than that.)

During the last two years I ranked various engineering colleges in Orissa based on the student preferences during BPUT’s counselling. In the following I will list the top 10 for 2006 and 2005. However, I must stress that proper rankings can only be done by using several parameters: student preference, opinions of companies, faculty quality, facilities etc. So my ranking based on only one criteria is flawed. But thats all the data that I have handy. So don’t take this ranking as gospel. Please use other channels to get more information on various colleges, such as their web pages.

2006 Top 10: (complete ranking with details on methodology) Not Considered: NIT Rourkela and KIIT Bhubaneswar as their 2006 admission is not through BPUT.

One year P.G. Diploma in Banking and Insurance Management: From Utkal University in collaboration with ICICI bank

You may recall that ICICI bank recently (on May 24th) signed an MOU with the Orissa government and also another one with Utkal University. The later was about starting courses whose graduates would most likely be hired by ICICI. They have moved fast and today there is an advertisement for a one year P.G. Diploma in Banking and Insurance Management offered by DDCE Utkal University in collaboration with ICICI bank. The filled forms, supposed to be available at a DDCE site (not available yet though), is due 20th June 2007 and the entrance exam to select 60 is on 1st July 2007.

A pre-advertisement from Sri Sri University

Sri Sri University is the latest mega project Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Vidya Mandir Trust has undertaken to translate our beloved Guru Ji’s vision of higher education being global, contemporary, relevant, holistic and empowering. The campus will be situated on a sprawling plateau, measuring 200 acres abutted on one side by a rain fed river and a railway line on the other. Only few kilometers away from Cuttack a traditional city and Bhubaneshwar the capital of Orissa an eastern state of India; the campus will sit in the lap of Mother Nature away from the pollution and distraction of a city yet within the reach of urban facilities.

Sri Sri University project: a powerpoint presentation

I received a power point presentation about the proposed Sri Sri University. It provides some details on what the plans about this university are. As per my conversation they planned to start in 2007 but it is getting delayed and they won’t start in 2007. One of the reason for the delay is that the government of Orissa has not yet passed the private university act. I hope they pass it this session of the assembly.

The university is being started by the Art of Living Foundation. Following is some information about it from its web page.

The Art of Living Foundation was inspired by the programs of spiritual leader and humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that began in 1982. It has been a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization in the U.S. since 1989. Accredited as a United Nations Non-Governmental organization in 1996, it is now one of the UN’s largest volunteer-based NGOs. It works in special consultative status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council, participating in a variety of committees and activities relating to health, education, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and disaster relief.

If anyone is interested in helping in the establishment and development of this university, I would be happy to put him/her in touch with the people who are in charge. Please write to me and let me know what kind of help you have in mind.

More on Ravenshaw University

Samaja reports more news on Ravenshaw University. Following are some points mentioned in their article:

  • Ravenshaw has advertised for registration in its Ph.D/D.Litt/D.Sc program.
  • They will semester system in the Bachelors and Masters level with half monthly examinations with four internal evaluations a year.
  • Application form and admission brochure are now available in their website and May 30 is the deadline for application.
  • Ravenshaw will not wait for the +3 results to come out and will finish admission based on the entrance exams by June.
  • They are trying to have five year integrated M.Sc programs and if this program is established this year then they will admit students to this program from the students who have qualified for +3. The students do not have to apply separately.
  • The state has released 10.5 crores to the university.
  • A UGC team of experts led by Prof. S. Ramegowda (former Chairman, AICTE and former Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka University) will visit on June 12th.

Besides the above news from the Samaj article, I heard that the VC of Ravenshaw has met some Ravenshaw alumni who are in academia in Orissa and has sought their advice. This is a very good move on the VC’s part as there are some really top-notch academicians in Orissa with Ravenshaw ties.

ICICI Bank will collaborate with Utkal University in setting up courses in banking and insurance

Tathya reports that ICICI will collaborate with Utkal University to start courses in banking and insurance. I guess this will be mutually beneficial to both Utkal University and ICICI. The later will get a good pool to hire its employees. More about ICICI’s plan in Orissa is at this sister site (direct link).

Sri Sri University project

Sri Sri University is planned to be established in Naraj (Cuttack) near Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It will be established by the Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir (SSRVM) Trust, the educational wing of the Art of Living. I am in touch with a couple of people associated with the Sri Sri University project. I have requested them for more information (plans, time lines etc.) on the project. If and when I receive them I will post it here.

So far the only information that is available on this are the ones in the news items about the MOU, and its wikipaedia entry.

Ravenshaw University with the help of XIMB is experimenting with on-line application

It seems Ravenshaw University with the help of XIMB is experimenting with on-line application. One can apply on-line at an XIMB site that is linked from the Ravenshaw University home page. But one still needs to physically mail a demand draft of the appropriate amount and a print out of the application form. One can print out the admit card from that site though.

Call to Ravenshaw alumni and well-wishers: Support, contribute and help in making it a world-class University

Recently the Vice Chancellor of Ravenshaw University made a presentation to the CM about Ravenshaw’s future. As an outcome of this presentation the Orissa government agreed to give land for a second campus of Ravenshaw. The Ravenshaw vice chancellor seems to have a lot of ideas on how to take Ravenshaw to the next level and is looking for support from all corners. If any Ravenshaw alumni or well-wisher would like to help in this goal of taking Ravenshaw to the next level, please get in touch with me.
